Thus, individual needs motivating the choice of the teaching profession are an important factor determining the extent to which the current work is beneficial for them. Thus, it is a typical psychological reaction to a professional situation, expressed through affective reactions and cognitive assessments. Job satisfaction plays an important role in the professional development of teachers, their effective performance and gives them a sense of quality of life. Research Aim: The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between the motives for choosing a profession and teachers’ job satisfaction. Method: The study used the method of diagnostic survey, survey technique and questionnaire. Elements of descriptive and correlation statistics (rho-Spearman linear correlation coefficient) were used for the analysis of the research material. Results: The issue of the dependence of job satisfaction on the motives for choosing a profession is the subject of these empirical analyses. The obtained research results confirm the fully adopted assumption of a significant relationship between these variables. Conclusions: When choosing the profession of a teacher, people are guided mainly by internal motivation, i.e. personal interests, willingness to work with children and youth, a specific pedagogical vocation. For a significant number of teachers, an important motive is also the teacher’s convenient working time and job security guaranteed by law. An essential element of the article’s content is the assumptions of James S. Coleman’s theory of social capital, Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy, and Aaron Antonovsky’s salutogenesis. Research Aim: The authors’ attention is focused on the diagnosis of the relationship between the specific and traditional present in the research of social educators’ dimensions of social threats and the views of social educators on their aetiology, significance for social reality, and thus determinants of the psychosocial existence of modern man, and finally the possibilities of overcoming these threats. Evidence-based Facts: In the traditionally understood causative paradigm of social pedagogy, the emphasis is primarily on solutions focused on using resources that naturally constitute the environment of human social participation. However, the text highlights the possibility of supplementing this paradigm with selected indications of the concept of social capital, logotherapy and salutogenesis in counteracting existential emptiness and the loss of the sense of the meaning of life. Summary: Such an approach allows for a deep, multidimensional insight into the issue of social threats. As a result, it provides knowledge about characteristic relationships between variables that condition the occurrence, differentiation, and development of social threats. {"title":"An Application of the NEP Scale in Studying Environmental Awareness of Academic Youth at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan","authors":"A. New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) presumes to step away from anthropocentrism and recognizing the limits to growth, which is based on unsustainable exploitation of the environment. Worldwide, the level of acceptance for NEP is measured by the NEP Scale (New Ecological Paradigm Scale) consisting of 12–15 theses, for which answers are expressed in a Likert scale. Research Aim: Using the NEP Scale for examination of academic youth’ senvironmental awareness. Method: Online survey including a 15-element NEP Scale translated into Polish was used; for questionnaire and data collecting Qualtrics Survey App was applied. The collected data from among N = 260 students were subjected to ordering, re-coding, and statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, frequencies, and t-test for the NEP index in the groups of genders, using SPSS Statistics 28.0.1.0. Respondents’ support for NEP was estimated by frequency analysis of “pro-ecological” responses, comparison of means, and the NEP index. Results: The frequency of responses expressing support for NEP was 74.5; the mean for individual questions valued from 1 (no support) to 5 (maximum support) was 4.13. The NEP index (scale from 0 to 1) was 0.78. T-test confirmed gender influence on NEP Index, which was higher among women than men (mean 0.79 vs. 0.72), with p = 0.007. Conclusions: The NEP Index values indicate the high environmental awareness of the studied academic youth. {"title":"Care and Educational Activities of the Podkarpackie Hospice for Children Foundation in 2006-2021. Another important event was the establishment of a day centre for terminally ill patients in Sheffield at St Luke’s Hospice. In Poland, hospice care was developed on the initiative of Hanna Chrzanowska. A special type of this institution are children’s hospices. One of them is the Podkarpackie Hospice for Children Foundation, established in 2006. Research Aim: The aim of the research was to present the history of the establishment and development of the Podkarpackie Hospice for Children Foundation, as well as analyse examples of patient care and educational activities undertaken by the management, employees and teachers cooperating with the Foundation in the period 2006–2021. The methodology used involved a critical analysis of documents and source materials and a review of the literature on hospice care. Evidence-based Facts: Two periods can be identified in the history of the Podkarpackie Hospice for Children Foundation between 2006 and 2021. From 2006 to 2011, patient care was provided under the at-home hospice care system. Simultaneously, efforts were undertaken to organise a separate location to expand the assistance provided, which resulted in the establishment of an in-patient hospice in 2011, which implements a broader range of tasks of the Foundation, including Perinatal Hospice, which was created in response to public demand. Summary: Patient care and educational activity of the Foundation is carried out through its individual units, including the at-home, in-patient and perinatal hospice, as well as the regional care and therapy centre “Tęczowy Domek”, which implement the goals and tasks of the Foundation. Research Aim: The systematic review aims to confirm the theory that the practice of yoga and meditation is beneficial for children and can help them in the school context. Evidence-based Facts: Ten articles were carefully analyzed to find out which yoga and meditation techniques were most used and what benefits they brought in developmental age. Thanks to breathing techniques and meditation, studies indicate that children learn to recognize their emotions and strategies to manage them in the best way. Summary: Protocols demonstrate that there are positive correlations between practicing yoga and meditation at school and a decrease in stress levels and an increase in attention span and memory. The article explores the relationship between motivational factors and needs satisfaction at work and WLB and life satisfaction. Research Aim: The aim of the research was to determine the relationships between the different types of motivation regulation postulated in the theory of self-determination by Deci and Ryan (2000) and the satisfaction of needs at work (autonomy, competence and bonds with other people) and WLB and the sense of life satisfaction of corporate employees. Method: The study covered 82 employees of five institutions from the financial sector, aged 22 to 62.27 (33%) of the respondents held a managerial position. The following questionnaires were used in the study: “Work-Life Balance” (Hill Hawkins, Ferris, Weitzman, 2001), “SWLS” (Juczyński, 2012), Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS) Tremblay, Blanchard, Taylor, Pelletier, Villeneuvei (2009), and Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale – Work Domain (Deci et al., 2001). Results: Among the respondents, a negative relationship between amotivation – lack of motivation to work and WLB was found. The factor that turned out to be positively associated with WLB was the satisfaction of the need of autonomy at work. Positive relationships were also found between intrinsic motivation and life satisfaction, as well as WLB and life satisfaction. Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that it is not so much the specific type of motivation that affects the maintenance of WLB, as the lack of motivation is associated with the disturbance of this balance. The key need that is met at work translates into WLB is the need for autonomy. Our study reported a positive relationship between WLB and life satisfaction. School is one area of children’s existence in which everyday life concentrates for many years. The article presents images of childhood spent in school, referring to occupied places and undertaken activities. Research Aim:The study’s aim was to learn about the experience of 3rd-grade students connected to school as a childhood place. Method: The research was carried out in the paradigm of qualitative research, constructed on narrative interviews. Researchers used friendly methods of collecting data when examining children. The respondents created artworks which became reference introductions to the interview. The 3rd-grade students described their school’s reality and experience. Results: Coded empirical data enabled to identify categories depicting school as a childhood place. Taking into account security, attractiveness, activity and identity, they were named as follows: school as a place for children’s games, school as a place to learn with others, school as a place of building identity and school as an untamed place. Conclusions: Research shows that school is a place where the personal treatment of a child is not always dominant in terms of an active self-regulatory person. {"title":"The Image of the Polish Children’s Book at the Turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries","authors":"Anna Izabela Boguszewska","doi":"10.17951/lrp.2023.42.2.225-239","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17951/lrp.2023.42.2.225-239","url":null,"abstract":"Introduction: Polish children’s literature grew out of a close relationship between literature and pedagogy, which took place at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in a difficult political and economic situation for Poles due to the continuation of the partition regime. The cultural development of the nation is connected with the upbringing of the young generation. In the nineteenth century, the Polish book was introduced as a means of education. Research Aim: The aim of the research used in the article was an attempt to reconstruct the image of the Polish children’s book at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, taking into account two research problems. They concern the aesthetics and educational messages of reading recommended for the youngest readers. These areas of research are quite sparsely represented. Methods and techniques of historical research were used. Evidence-based Facts: Polish children’s literature developing during the partitions of Poland was studied by a group of Polish researchers: literary scholars, bibliologists, pedagogues and historians of education. However, this research area is unexploited, constituting a rich material for new research searches. Summary: The conducted analyses show that in the years preceding regaining independence, two educational positions dominated children’s literature. The first concerned building a patriotic attitude, the second emphasized pragmatism and realism of everyday situations. A number of examples of books for children that confirm these conclusions have been analyzed. The formation of patriotism in children included the transmission of glorious historical pages from the history of the Polish nation, awakening an affirmative attitude to native nature present in key editions for young readers at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Everyday life is presented mainly by images of family, children’s games and instructive stories, adventures from the life of peers. The aesthetics of the children’s book of the discussed period fits into the style in force at that time, based on the pursuit of a masterful typographic arrangement. The description of tacit knowledge is presented in the light of the nursery’s resources, not its weaknesses. Research Aim: To show how relational tacit knowledge is visible in the work of early years practitioners in nurseries. Method: The study involved 20 early years practitioners in Warsaw, it was an in-depth interview. The study used the framework of Collins’ theory of explicit and tacit knowledge. The analysis of the interview data was carried out using the MAXQDA 2022 software. The part of the interview concerning the research results presented in this article contained 12 questions. Results: When analyzing the coded fragments about the strategies used in conversations and cooperation with the nursery management, they were divided into two parts. The first part of the strategy is applying them to a manager who is considered to be a trustworthy, helpful, committed, understanding person. The second part of the strategy is to apply them to a manager who is considered to be unpredictable, unorganized, unjust in financial management, unjust in managing employee resources, and uncommitted. Most early years practitioners declare an open strategy of conversation towards their colleagues and children, based on the directness of the message and honesty of expression. The early years practitioners declare that they use the sandwich method with their parents. Conclusions: It was observed that the greatest intensification of informal strategies occurs in the relationship between the early years practitioners and parents. In the statements of the respondents, it was noticeable that even if relational tacit knowledge tries to see the light of day, it is basically one-sided in the form of requirements for parents to meet the expectations of the nursery. Neuroticism and emotional intelligence are particularly important given that this is one of the most emotionally exhausting professions. Research Aim: The aim of the study was to explore whether neuroticism is a predictor of teachers’ emotional intelligence and whether there is variation in these given seniority and the type of subject taught. Method: The following questionnaires were applied: Eysenck Personality Questionnaire EPQ-R(S); scale the Neuroticism in the NEO-PI-R personality questionnaire; Popular Questionnaire of Emotional Intelligence PKIE. Results: A predictor of high emotional intelligence is low neuroticism (of the Big Three-PEN Eysenck). Low neuroticism among teachers is associated with high emotional intelligence. Teachers with seniority of more than 20 years have significantly lower neuroticism (of the Big Five) including depressive sub-trait and higher emotional intelligence including control over their own emotions. Conclusions: Increasingly proficient emotion management can be predicted with years of service provided, but when the teacher is low in neuroticism.
