What function does evidence have in practical deliberations toward decisions about what to do? Most writers on EBP seem to think of evidence largely as quantitative data, serving as a foundation from which practice could and should be directly derived. In this paper I argue that we are better served by according a different and more indirect function to evidence in practical reasoning. To establish this claim I employ Toulmin’s model of argumentation. On this model the evidence-as-foundation view amounts to evidence as data/grounds. The purpose is to estimate the form of Piaget’s constructivism. I take advantage of Ernst von Glasersfeld’s ‘radical constructivist’ interpretation of Piaget. Contrary to von Glasersfeld, it is argued that Piaget at the same time is a realist with respect to the existence of the external world, and a ‘genetic-transcendental constructivist’ in relation to the development of knowledge. This selective sequence expresses not only the disposition but also a hypothesis. The claim is that this intimate alienness (hetero-affection) and distant proximity (tele-presence) makes the human hands technical and associates the human being originally with technology. In this article I will, firstly, present several aims that might have triggered Rousseau to write “Emile”. Secondly, I will discuss Rousseau’s view of the so called “educational paradox”.
