We consider hybrid planar waveguides which are constituted of ion-exchanged glass substrates top covered by high index polymer layers. They have been specially designed and fabricated for a highly efficient nonlinear interaction. Without any corrugation, phase-matching between the different waves is realized thanks to the use of different guided modes at the different wavelengths. This is called modal dispersion phase matching (MDPM). In this communication we report on second harmonic generation after a longer propagation in the waveguide of 5mm.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. In this work, experimental measurements of cleaning efficiency for three different metallic particulate contaminants (Au, 1.2 /spl mu/m; Cu 3 /spl mu/m and W 0.7 /spl mu/m) on silicon are reported. Active IR polarimetric sensing has been successfully applied for the remote sensing of man made objects and, particular, of buried mines. However, the scattering and power/SNR constraints require near overhead viewing. In contrast, passive polarimetric sensing allows detection with much more operationally convenient arrangements which is highly desirable when working in mined lands. In this work, an approach for detecting buried antipersonnel mines based on the dynamic behaviour difference is presented. The basic idea consists of using a sequence of images of the same piece of land at different time intervals which are applied as the input of a reconfigurable cellular neural network (CNN) architecture. Then, a learning algorithm is applied that optimizes both the network parameters and the network topology that best fit the desired behaviour.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor is becoming nowadays a popular optical laboratory tool. Its inherent mechanical properties and conceptual simplicity and the possibility of working even with non monochromatic light sources, are its main advantages in the field of wavefront sensors. In this work we introduce the use of a Shack-Hartmann (SH) sensor as a positioning device. As the lateral shearing interferometer the Shack-Hartmann sensor can achieve a multiple range superresolution compared to the Rayleigh depth of focus. It belongs to a class of optical devices which estimate the shape of an incoming wavefront from a set of measurements of its local slopes.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. In this paper, we report a novel implementation for WDM add/drop multiplexing application based on acoustically modulated fiber Bragg grating. We use acoustic waves to excite lateral vibration and hence micro-bending of the fiber grating. By appropriately controlling the period of the micro-bending, the coupling between the core modes and certain cladding modes in the fiber is produced. Through such mechanisms, we can select the reflection window by switching on/off the acoustic wave.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. Chalcogenide (ChG) glasses have been widely investigated as candidate materials for waveguide applications and we have recently reported on optical properties of bulk materials and their use in undoped and rare-earth doped films. Current efforts in our group to examine property differences introduced to these glasses during film deposition have shown notable structural and chemical variation to the parent bulk glass material. Most recently, we have expanded our capabilities to structurally characterize single and multiple layer films suitable for use in devices. It is our objective to understand how structural and chemical changes affect linear and nonlinear optical behavior of these elements.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat.
