Furthermore, the high prevalence of malnutrition and the increase in the elderly yearly can affect the incidence of this inflammation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of angular cheilitis in the elderly. The rapid review method was employed to accomplish this using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for screening and search procedures. The search was performed through the Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases using specific keywords and inclusion criteria. A total of 30 observational study articles from 16 countries focusing on several elderly populations were included in this study. The lowest and highest prevalence value was 1% and 46.66%, respectively, with 1,347 out of 14,927 elderly experiencing angular cheilitis. Of the 30 articles reviewed, 23 showed a value below 10%, while the remaining 7 were above 10%. The differences in prevalence could be attributed to the limitations of the articles utilized in this study, which vary widely in terms of sample population characteristics, location, gender allocation, as well as study and data collection methods. This review showed that the prevalence of angular cheilitis in most countries is low. However, the two studies conducted in Indonesia have a high and low prevalence, respectively.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131255729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the use of Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.), a multifunctional plant with antibacterial, antidiabetic, anticholesterol, antioxidant, and analgesic effects, has proven to be effective overcome this issue. The antimicrobial compounds of tamarind such as polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins, which damage cell walls, inactivate enzymes, and interfere with protein transport, involve bacteria lysis. Therefore, this study aims to determine the antibacterial effect of tamarind seed coat extract against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC® 29213TM. The design of this study is experimental laboratory, with a post-test-only control group design, which was analyzed using ANOVA and Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests. The parameters measured included the zone of inhibition, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) at various extract concentrations of 15%, 10%, 5%, and 2.5%. The inhibition zone was determined using the blank disk method with a digital caliper, while the MIC and MBC were measured using the dilution method. Tamarind seed coat was extracted using a maceration method with 70% ethanol, divided into four group concentrations. The results showed average inhibition zones of 15 mm, 12.7 mm, 10.6 mm, and 0 mm at concentrations of 15%, 10%, 5%, and 2.5%, respectively. The MIC and MBC obtained through the dilution method in the tube were clearer at 5% and turbid at 15%. Furthermore, the value of both parameters at 5% and 10% were determined by subculturing the solution onto Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. Based on the results, higher concentrations of the extract were more effective against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC® 29213TM.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117158208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enlargement and bleeding gums preceding tooth loss are clinical symptoms of this disease. Moreover, early diagnosis is difficult for patients until severe destruction has occurred. The impacts include feelings of disturbance and discomfort that will affect the quality of life. Periodontal health is not only limited to relieving pain but also includes aesthetic purposes, preventing further damage, and maintaining general health. This is because dental and oral health is an integral part of general well-being, which allows individuals to achieve their most important goals, namely a better quality of life. This study aims to examine the relationship between quality of life and periodontal disease.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129212136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gingival hyperpigmentation is an extremely disturbing aesthetic problem caused by melanin deposition of melanocytes in the basal and suprabasal layers of the epithelium. The color of the pigment can range from pale to dark brown or black, depending on the amount and distribution in the tissue. Gingival depigmentation therapy is a periodontal plastic surgery method that can provide patients with good outcomes. A 21-year-old female complained of having brown front gums and an unsettling appearance. The patient does not smoke, has allergies to drugs and food, or suffers from systemic disease. The depigmentation process was conducted using number15 scalpels, and the gingival contour was created before irrigation utilizing Kirkland. Furthermore, a periodontal pack was used to cover the surgical site, and there were no complaints during the postoperative follow-up visit.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128128472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The management for OSCC are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have high toxicity and side effects, therefore effort are needed to reduce them. Several studies show that herbal medicines have anticancer effects with lower toxicity and side effects. The objective is to discuss about management of OSCC using chemotherapy and anticancer herbal medicines as adjunctive therapy.  A 59-year-old man came to the oral medicine clinic complaining a painful ulcer on the right tongue since 8 months ago. The ulcer had been enlarged in the last 3 months and the tongue was difficult to be moved. He used pain relievers and aloe vera gel but there was no improvement. He smoked one pack a day since 40 years ago. Intraoral showed an irregular indurated endophytic mass with an ulcer on the right lateral of the tongue. An incisional biopsy was performed and the histopathological diagnosis was poorly differentiated OSCC. The patient was referred to the oncology department and advised for chemotherapy 6 cycles per 3 weeks. He also used herbal medicines containing Panax ginseng radix, Panax pseudoginseng radix, Ophiopogonis japonicus, Ganoderma lucidum, Ligusticum wallichii rhizoma, and Atractylodes macrocephala rhizoma. The content of these herbal medicines have anticancer and immunomodulatory effects. After the second cycle of chemotherapy, there was a significant improvement. OSCC management with chemotherapy combined with anticancer herbal medicines can increase the success of therapy and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114152432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yogurt and probiotic supplements are drinks that are often consumed to help digestive function and improve the immune system. However, both drinks have a low pH, thereby, a long time of consumption can trigger the demineralization process. This study aims to evaluate the enamel hardness after applying yogurt and probiotic supplements, which was carried out experimentally in a laboratory with a one-group post-test design. The sample used is 9 human maxillary premolars in each treatment group. The treatment group comprises the test material, such as yogurt and probiotic supplements, as well as one control group with artificial saliva. Dental samples were immersed in the test material for 96 hours, and the enamel hardness level was measured with a Micro Vickers Hardness tester. The T-paired test showed that soaking with yogurt does not significantly affect the hardness of the enamel, as indicated by a p-value of 0.016. However, the effect was significant in probiotic supplements, with p=0.004. The results showed that soaking with yogurt was not significantly different from probiotic supplements in reducing enamel hardness, as evidenced by the Post Hoc (LSD) test (p=0.464). Conclusively, yogurt decreased enamel hardness less than probiotic supplements.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115791499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most prevalent malocclusion in speech or articulation disorders is anterior open bite (AOB). Excessive propulsion of the tongue forward when articulating phonemes causes altered articulation in patients with open bites, as the tongue is in a more forward posture. The presence of this speech disorder can have a negative impact on a person's quality of life, although there hasn't been much research done on the impacts of AOB in cases of speech disorders in children. This study was to look at the link between speech disorders and the occurrence of anterior open bites (AOB) in a comprehensive way. Search results of research on four databases, namely ScienDirect, PubMed, Spingerlink, and Google Scholar, are displayed. The keywords used include speech disorder, articulation disorder, open bite, anterior open bite.  Five articles were selected using case control and cross-sectional methods in their research. The sample with AOB in this study was analyzed to determine the presence of speech disorders. The five articles gave similar results, showing that patients with malocclusion, especially AOB, had a tendency to have speech disorders. Articulation disorders in the phoneme /s/z/d/l/t/ become the dominant problem experienced by patients with AOB. Anterior open bite (AOB) is a form of malocclusion that causes more articulation disorders than other malocclusions. The presence and position of the tongue are thought to have a substantial influence on articulation disorders.","PeriodicalId":250739,"journal":{"name":"Dentika: Dental Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116637225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
