First, it presents some reflections on why neo-institutional scholars have not invested enough effort in studying the upper echelons of organizations, the domain of most CXOs. Second, the chapter provides numerous examples of the CXO style and what it should be, according to consulting and executive search firms, by engaging in ‘CXO rhetoric watching’. The chapter proposes that the most distinct components of CXO style are the incessant building of social capital via networking and of political capital via reputation. Third, networking and influencing activities are related to research on boundary spanning roles, and it is suggested that these roles are predecessors of CXOs. Finally, the chapter argues that there is a distinct psychological profile for individuals who exhibit the CXO style, but that it is a scarce resource that reduces the pool of candidates for CXO roles.","PeriodicalId":245888,"journal":{"name":"The Changing C-Suite","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126013332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also summarizes why the CXO phenomenon appeared and became so widespread and intense; what its essential nature is; where CXOs operate, both in and between organizations; how they operate and which distinct behaviours they exhibit; as well as who CXOs are, from an executive identity perspective. The chapter argues that studying the spread of CXO roles promotes a better understanding of the role of the CEO, the quintessential chief officer, and thereby, the essence of what it means to be a senior executive. the main insights, The book concludes by proposing the ideal type of contemporary executive in complex organizations.","PeriodicalId":245888,"journal":{"name":"The Changing C-Suite","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124935201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
