Determining changes of spontaneous activity and connectivity of the brain is a critical step towards treatment of PD patients. Resting State functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (RS-fMRI) is a non-invasive method that we use in this work to investigate intra- and inter-regional features of the brain. To this end, we apply three methods, Spontaneous Low Frequency Fluctuation (SLFF), Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) and Seed Correlation Analysis (SCA). The results of advanced statistical image analysis on SLFF maps show hypoactivation in the basal ganglia and hyperactivation in the motor cortex and the cerebellum. We found that the seed correlation value between Left cerebellum and left putamen is the most discriminating parameter between Parkinson patients and healthy group. Moreover, SCA features are more significant compared to the intra-regional features (SLFF or ReHo). The result of clustering by 16 selected features is 85%.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115735046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Key issue in implementation of EMG in this application is conversion of EMG signal into torque data. This paper presents a methodology of EMG signal to estimated joint torque conversion by using genetic algorithm (GA). Basic principle of GA, formulation, and implementation to the problem are discussed in this paper. Experimentation with real life EMG data has been carried out to assess the feasibility of the methodology in robot-assisted stroke rehabilitation problem. Preliminary investigations show that the methodology can be used in EMG to joint torque conversion algorithm.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124637200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Characterization and functional studies in this area is vital to identify patients at risk of bone fractures. Identification of elastic bone modulus can be done using several methods including mechanical testing and correlations between microarchitectural parameters. In this study, compressive testing was done until failure on bovine cancellous bone extracted from the neck of femur. A thorough experimental protocol was used for extraction and cleaning of cylindrical bone samples. Three cylindrical bovine cancellous bone specimens were obtained from the femoral cadaver for the experiment. The specimens have a diameter of 10mm and a total length of 25 mm with an effective length for experiment of 15 mm. After extraction of the bone samples, the marrow was removed from the hard tissue by immersing in an ultrasound cleaner and then vacuumed. Results showed strong relationships between volume fraction and mechanical properties of cancellous bone. However, there is a weak relationship between the bulk density and the mechanical properties.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115911511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding some optical properties of human skin and using finite element method (FEM) and ABAQUS, we represent a numerical analysis of coupled thermal and mechanical field and simulate the surface acoustic waves (SAWs) resulting from pulse laser irradiation within the assumed three-layered model. The simulations show that SAWs are sensitive to changes in laser parameters such as pulse rise time and radius of laser spot and will be able to be utilized to quantitavely extract the structural features of skin such as thickness, elasticity, etc and choosing best experimental parameters of laser.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128557407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to some properties of MR images such as intensity inhomogeneity of tissues, partial volume effect, noise and some other imaging artifacts, segmentation of brain MRI based on voxel gray values is prone to error. Hence involving problem specific information and expert knowledge in designing segmentation algorithms seems to be useful. A two-fold fuzzy segmentation algorithm based on Bayesian method is proposed in this paper. The Bayesian part uses the gray value of voxels in segmenting images and the segmented image is used as the input to fuzzy classifier to improve the misclassified voxels especially in borders between tissues. Similarity index is used to compare our algorithm with the well known method of Ashburner which has been implemented by Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) software. Two different brain MRI datasets are used to evaluate the algorithm. Brainweb as a simulated brain MRI dataset and ADNI as real brain MRI dataset are practiced images. Results show that our algorithm performs well in comparison with the one implemented in SPM. It can be concluded that incorporating expert knowledge and problem specific information in segmentation process improve segmentation result. The major advantage of proposed method is that one can update the knowledge base and incorporate new information into segmentation process by adding new fuzzy rules.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122600451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model includes femoral component, tibia component and tibia insert. Effect of soft tissue was considered the same with it is reported in literature and Effect of friction is neglected. The mechanism was studied in two separate steps. Results show 155° of flexion with 10mm anterior displacement of tibia from full extension to full flexion. In each step, the kinematic solver displays the relative positions of prosthesis components and calculates the velocity of them. This investigation represents the first attempt of using motion analysis software which is capable to solve mechanisms only driven by forces, to predict the TKR motion without any programming. In order to validate the results a full flexion cycle was compare with the results which is reported in literature. Further study have to carry out to evaluate the ability of this kinematic analysis model for analyzing the kinematics of prosthesis with considering all 6DOF which happen in real cases.","PeriodicalId":241343,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE EMBS Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (IECBES)","volume":"37 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127381390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
