He then spent two years as a Research Associate with W.D. Kingery in the Ceramics Division at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned to Sheffield as Lecturer in Glass Technology in 1961, becoming in turn Senior Lecturer, Reader, and then occupant of a personal Chair in 1986, and currently Emeritus Professor. His main interests being in glass manufacturing processes and machines. At various times he has been closely associated with glass technology studies at the University of Chemical Technology, Prague, Åbo Akademi, Finland, the University of Aveiro, Portugal, the University of Nottingham, and the Polytechnic University, Bucharest.
