Neglecting the potential and possible contributions of information architecture within the design process is recognized to be one of the causes for incompatibility of the tools to the perceptual and behavioural qualities of users, especially where the scale of physical space is concerned. This study looked for an approach for the design of smart environments and technological tools based on developing multi-dimensional networking and interconnected experiences. In order to reach the objectives of this study, spatial communication projects that focus on experience design were created and studied in 2010-2012 in the design studio course in the Department of Communication Design of a well-established university. The analysis of 84 projects reflected the importance of integrating the physical data as an element of design within the process of obtaining compact design solutions.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134102081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This framework mainly addresses two important issues. First, it builds standardized component models for heterogeneous sensing and acting devices based on the middleware technology. Second, it implements a general purpose task planner, which coordinates associated components to achieve various tasks. The video demonstrates how these two functionalities are combined together in order to provide services in intelligent environments. Two different tasks, a localization task and a robopub task, are implemented to show the feasibility, efficiency and expandability of the system.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122122609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a system based on Virtual and Augmented Reality that has the potential to act as an educational and support tool in everyday tasks for people with cognitive disabilities. Our solution consists of two components: the first that enables users to train for several essential quotidian activities and the second that is meant to offer real time guidance feedback for immediate support. In order to illustrate the functionality of our proposed system, we chose to train and support navigation skills. Thus, we conducted a preliminary study on people with Down Syndrome (DS) based on a navigation task. Our experiment was aimed at evaluating the visual and spatial perception of people with DS when interacting with different elements of our system. We provide a preliminary evaluation that illustrates how people with DS perceive different landmarks and types of visual feedback, in static images and videos. Although we focused our study on people with DS, people with different cognitive disabilities could also benefit from the features of our solution. This analysis is mandatory in the design of a virtual intelligent system with several functionalities that aims at helping disabled people in developing basic knowledge in every day tasks.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116074291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The spatial information is obtained through spatial markers, like motion sensors for instance. Since different markers may be involved in different occurrences of the same type of behaviour, there is a need for being able to express vagueness, which in our approach is achieved by using rough sets rather than standard sets to denote the space in which an activity occurs.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124383129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper presents a novel approach to distinguish between different field's plowing techniques by means of an RGB-D sensor. The presented system can be easily integrated in commercially available Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In order to successfully classify the plowing techniques, two different measurement algorithms have been developed. Experimental tests show that the proposed methodology is able to provide a good classification of the field's plowing depths.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123735265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People with Down's Syndrome often experience low social integration, and low degree of independence. As part of the European Commission funded POSEIDON project, we want to explore how context-aware, and assistive technology can enable users with Down's Syndrome be more independent, including the ability to commute alone to a place of interest. In this paper, we report on our current progress in developing navigational services within the context of the POSEIDON project. We carried out a semi-structured qualitative evaluation of an early version of our navigational services with 6 individuals with Down's Syndrome, and report on our findings.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126700040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small changes in our life daily, such as turning off lights or air conditioning when there are not people who use it, can result in substantial energy savings. In this document, we provide information about of a support system for energy conservation using sensors, actuators and agents. The wireless network system is an embedded interconnected. Agents, sensors for monitoring a room and actuators for gradually manipulate elements like windows, blinds, led lamps and air conditioning, besides the application of optimization techniques and fuzzy logic. The energy required to give comfort, comes from two main sources possible, artificial (by the company supply electricity) and natural (natural air flows, solar lighting, etc.). Our main goal is through bio-inspired optimization algorithms and fuzzy logic control provides an adequate lighting and temperature settings according to an activity that takes place in the room.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133182002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper proposes a smart holistic system that comprises two components: (1) a urine colour measurement system that can be installed in restrooms, and (2) a mobile app that can be used to interact with the measurement unit, track the user's BHL, view statistical data and advice. The main prototype was built based on low-cost embedded Internet devices coupled with RGB sensors and light sources. Based on the RGB theory, the system was tested in a laboratory, using liquid mixed with food colour of different shades. Results were presented on the mobile app. The system was successfully implemented, as a ubiquitous \"on-the-go\" self- test solution for raising awareness in a \"greener\" and \"user- friendly\" way.","PeriodicalId":228285,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114717167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
