However, even the most usable, beautiful, and delightful application can have an impact on its user in a negative way. Have you ever thought about how the application might burden the user, even in light of these positive attributes? For example, maybe the game that you designed to be irresistibly engaging makes the user feel guilty about how much time she spends with it. Or consider how a food-tracking application, which allows the user to take photos of his food to monitor his diet, may violate his family rules about no phones at the dinner table. Perhaps the fitness tracker you've designed to help people be more active only serves to make them feel badly about themselves for not exercising after sustaining an injury.","PeriodicalId":213775,"journal":{"name":"GetMobile Mob. In fact, for some behaviors like smoking, the harm to health is so well documented that it has led to public health policies, such as banning smoking inside buildings. Similarly, there is also growing evidence documenting the health benefits of many behaviors, e.g., regular exercise and healthy eating. However, we are only beginning to understand the deep bi-directional connections between human behavior and biology, largely powered by the rapidly increasing body of knowledge from the field of behavioral epigenetics. Since 2000, an explosion of results are unraveling the two-way pathways of how our molecular biology influences our behavior and how our behavior influences our molecular biology","PeriodicalId":213775,"journal":{"name":"GetMobile Mob. Yet, only point-to-point MIMO multiplexing can be performed efficiently in current networks [3]. More advanced MIMO solutions, such as massive MIMO, coordinated multi-point, distributed MIMO, and multi-user MIMO, all require the base station to know the downlink channels prior to transmission. We show for the first time that Bluetooth transmissions can be used to create Wi-Fi and ZigBee-compatible signals using backscatter communication. Since Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ZigBee radios are widely available, this enables a backscatter design that works using only commodity devices. We build an FPGA prototype that creates 2–11 Mbps Wi-Fi or Zigbee packets by backscattering Bluetooth transmissions. We use this to demonstrate previously infeasible applications including the first contact lens form-factor antenna prototype and implantable neural recording interface that communicate directly to commodity devices, such as smartphones, thus enabling the vision of Internet-connected implanted devices","PeriodicalId":213775,"journal":{"name":"GetMobile Mob. Most of today's wearable devices and applications still rely on a paired smartphone for secure Internet communication, even though many current generation wearables are equipped with Wi-Fi and 3G/4G network interfaces that provide direct Internet access. If you're building an app that uses location, motion data, or inferred data about usage, there will necessarily be inaccuracy in the output of those systems -- some error that cannot be completely eliminated from the system. In the ubiquitous computing community, there is an unofficial standard that 85% accuracy is \"good enough\" for sensing based on machine learning. But it's not so simple to say that 85% should be your target accuracy to consider a system useful. Maybe 85% accuracy is good enough for an app that helps you identify wasteful appliances so you can conserve water in your home, but is completely unacceptable when three times out of 20 your fall detection app accidentally calls emergency services thinking your loved one has fallen down even though she hasn't.","PeriodicalId":213775,"journal":{"name":"GetMobile Mob. However, smartphone manufacturers and most of the mobile computing research community make a simplifying assumption that all smartphone users are similar or, at best, constitute a small number of user types, based on their behaviors. Manufacturers design phones for the broadest audience and hope they work for all users. Researchers mostly analyze data from smartphone-based user studies and report results without accounting for the many diff erent groups of people that make up the user base of smartphones. We challenge these elementary characterizations of smartphone users and show evidence of the existence of a much more diverse set of users. We analyzed one month of application usage from 106,762 Android users and discovered 382 distinct types of users based on their application usage behaviors, using our own two-step clustering and feature ranking selection approach, and gave a meaningful label to the users in each cluster, such as Screen Checkers and Young Parents. Our results have profound implications on the reproducibility and reliability of mobile computing studies, design and development of applications, determination of which apps should be pre-installed on a smartphone and, in general, on the smartphone usage experience for diff erent types of users.","PeriodicalId":213775,"journal":{"name":"GetMobile Mob.
