METHODS: We evaluated 67 participants (36 boys and 31 girls), aged 7 to 14 years old, from public schools of a city in a metropolitan area. All were submitted to four walking tests, two in each of the corridors. The variables analyzed were: walked distance, work rate, mean blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA for repeated measures and significance level at p<0.05. RESULTS: The comparison between the tests in each corridor and between the best tests in the different corridors did not show significant differences in the blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation. The walked distance was not statistically different in the two tests on each corridor. However, the participants covered greater distances on the 30.5m corridor (p<0.05) compared to the best test between corridors. However, this increase was less than 10%. Regarding the cardiac overload and the work rate, there were no significant differences between the corridors. CONCLUSIONS: There were differences in walked distance between the corridors, however they were less than 10% with no significant changes in the other measured parameters. Therefore, the 20m corridor had a good reproducibility for the population of this study.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"43 1","pages":"75-80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80942667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are described in the literature according to the device and method of treatment, with recommendations that range from full weight bearing to non-weight bearing restrictions. There are studies comparing osteosynthesis devices and surgical aspects, but no references were found on how or when to allow weight bearing on the affected limb in the standing position. OBJECTIVES: The present study learned from Brazilian orthopedists which methods of osteosynthesis they use to treat open tibial fractures, whether they refer patients to physical therapy, when and why they allow partial weight bearing for both physical activity and therapy. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-five orthopedists answered a questionnaire during the 14th Brazilian Conference of Orthopedic Trauma. Results: The results showed that, in Brazil, the most widely used osteosynthesis device is the external fixator, but earlier weight bearing while standing occurs when intramedullary nails are used. Most orthopedists refer patients to physical therapy and allow partial weight bearing in the standing position according to the material used for synthesis. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there is a preference for external fixation, that most orthopedists refer patients to physical therapy and that the synthesis material influences restrictions on partial weight bearing.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"12 1","pages":"514-520"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79182760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the acute effects of MVS with hyperoxia have not been elucidated. Objective: To analyze the acute effects of mechanical ventilation with hyperoxia on the morphometry of the rat diaphragm. METHODS: An experimental, prospective study was conducted with Wistar rats (weight: 400±20 g), which were randomly allocated to two groups. The control group (n=4) was anesthetized, tracheostomized and kept spontaneously breathing room air for 90 minutes. The experimental group (n=5) was also anesthetized, curarized, tracheostomized and kept in controlled mechanical ventilation for the same amount of time. Both groups were submitted to median thoracotomy for sample collection of costal fibers from the diaphragm muscle, which were sectioned every 5 μm and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for the morphometric study. Independent Student's t tests were employed to investigate differences between groups, with a significance level of p<0.05. RESULTS: There were no signs of acute muscle lesions, however the blood capillaries became dilated in the experimental group. The mean morphometric data related to the maximum cross-sectional diameter of the diaphragm costal fibers were 61.78 ±17.79 µm and 70.75±9.93 µm (p=0.045) for the control and experimental groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term mechanical ventilation with hyperoxia led to significant microvascular and muscle changes, which may reflect the onset of an inflammatory process.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"1 1","pages":"487-492"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89738227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: uncontrolled clinical trial with 11 women that presented overactivity of the detrusor muscle in urodynamic tests. All of the subjects were previously treated with anticholinergic medication, without response. The treatment consisted of 12 PTNS sessions of 30 minutes each, two times a week. The electrical stimulator Dualpex 961® (Quark medical) was used. The instruments chosen to evaluate QoL were the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) and the \"International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short-Form\" (ICIQ-SF). The questionnaires were applied before and after the treatment. RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in the following domain scores of the KHQ: incontinence impact (74.55±27.75 versus 38.18±13.82; p=0.008), role limitations (66.45±25.89 versus 26.91±11.22; p=0.008), physical limitations (73.91±29.46 versus 30.91±12.79; p=0.008), social limitations (39.18±35.60 versus 17.45±12.26; p=0.028), personal relationships (25.64±29.16 versus 10.45±15.23; p=0.043), emotions (65.82±38.56 versus 26.00±20.45; p=0.005), sleep/energy (39.18±37.51 versus 16.45±18.17; p=0.012) and severity measures (62.00±17.70 versus 33.00±16.59; p= 0.003), except for general health perception (51.36±30.75 versus 37.73±25.63; p=0.068). In the ICIQ-SF scores it was also possible to observe a significant improvement (10.09±6.50 versus 3.73±3.00; p=0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The PTNS treatment improved the QoL of women with overactive bladder and refractory to anticholinergic medication. Therefore, PTNS can be considered a good alternative for OAB treatment as it is safe and inexpensive compared to other therapeutic approaches.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"34 5 1","pages":"480-486"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77693271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METODOS: A resistencia eletrica foi calculada indiretamente pela Lei de Ohm, sendo a tensao eletrica gerada em um equipamento de corrente constante (10 mA, 100 Hz, 100 μs e pulso bifasico quadrado simetrico) e captada por um osciloscopio digital. Dez agentes de acoplamento (geis, n=5; liquidos, n=5) foram submetidos a eletrolise com corrente bifasica quadratica simetrica (CB), 0,0134 mA/mm2, 100 Hz, 100 μs ou com corrente continua (CC) a 0,0017 mA/mm2 de densidade de corrente, durante 30 minutos, sendo reavaliados a cada 5 minutos. Para analise dos dados, aplicaram os testes de Friedman e Kruskal-Wallis, seguidos de Rank e Dunn, respectivamente, e, para a correlacao, empregou-se o coeficiente de Spearman (α=0,05). RESULTADOS: Os valores iniciais de resistencia dos geis variaram entre 116,00 e 146,00 Ω, e dos agentes de acoplamento liquidos, entre 106,00 e 4726,67 Ω, apresentando, em sua maioria, correlacao positiva com o tempo de eletrolise. Conclusoes: Conclui-se que os geis, a agua potavel e a solucao fisiologica sao os indicados para a pratica da estimulacao eletrica terapeutica, pois mantem a baixa resistencia durante o periodo de estimulacao. Por outro lado, o uso de agua destilada ou desionizada nao e recomendado, pois apresentam alta resistencia a passagem da corrente.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"3 1","pages":"499-505"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90572794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Thirty-eight healthy subjects took part in the study, including 17 young adults (mean age 23±2.38 years old) and 21 older adults (mean age 67±2.42 years old). The device used to quantify trunk sway was the magnetic field sensor Polhemus® 3Space Isotrack II. The measurements were taken in the eyes-opened (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) condition with the subjects seated first on a wooden stable surface (SS) then on a foam unstable surface (US) without back or foot support. Each sensory condition was assessed for 90 seconds. The analyzed parameters were: maximum amplitude (Amp), total trajectory (Traj) and mean velocity (Vel) in the sagittal (X) and frontal (Y) planes. RESULTS: In the EO and EC conditions on SS, young adults presented greater postural sway in the X and Y planes on the Traj and Vel parameters. In the US, young adults showed greater Y Traj and Y Vel in the EO and EC conditions, and there was no significant difference between the groups with regard to X Traj and X Vel in the EC condition. The young adults presented greater Amp only in the EOSS condition in the X plane. CONCLUSIONS: The young adult subjects presented greater sway in the sitting position than the older adult subjects. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was administered, and plantar pressure was determined using a computerized baropodometric system (FootWork). The sample was then divided into control group, which wore pre-fabricated insoles, and intervention group, which wore ethylvinylacetate insoles for eight weeks. Baropodometric data were collected and the questionnaire was administered once again. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the comparison between groups and baropodometric data. However, a change was noted in the behavior of the load variables between evaluations, with an increase in mean load pressure and maximal plantar pressure (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between groups for any anatomical site in the different evaluations. Within each group, there was a reduction in foot pain and back pain between evaluations (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both types of insole reduced pain symptoms in the lumbar region and feet. After eight weeks of use, there was an increase in maximal and mean plantar pressure and a reduction in plantar surface area with both types of insole.","PeriodicalId":21195,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira De Fisioterapia","volume":"540 1","pages":"542-548"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79649763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
