In many African countries teachers currently have insufficient knowledge to teach literacy in local languages and learning materials are scarce, especially for children with learning difficulties. As part of the GraphoWorld network, CAPOLSA/University of Zambia is developing new mobile-based method for providing in-service training for teachers in literacy instruction and assisting children with learning difficulties. GraphoGame Teacher Training Service was piloted in October 2014 in rural Zambia. An orientative workshop was given to 24 teachers who learned about literacy instruction methodology and then organized a GraphoGame intervention to randomly selected 2nd grade children either at home or in a school environment. Parents of the children in the home intervention group were also encouraged to play GraphoGame. GraphoGame learning analytics shows that both the children and their parents improved their word reading skills. Children who played GraphoGame performed better than their non-playing classmates in the EGRA letter-sound knowledge test at the end of the intervention. Teachers, parents and children were all motivated to use ICT-based literacy learning tools and their literacy skills levels show high demand for support services for literacy instruction.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116640459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The course formed part of a large scale implementation aimed at changing teachers' classroom practice to reflect a 21st century teaching and learning engagement. The course was purposely designed for a gameful educational user experience to address the design challenge of motivating the participants through a yearlong intervention. Although the actual design and implementation of the course is beyond the scope of this paper, we present results that indicate that the course was experienced mostly relevant and positive. This novel way of gauging the sentiment and hedonistic attributes of a course, holds much promise for similar applications.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132027545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concepts discussed in this paper can easily be modified to fit several industries; higher education, the legal sector, the retail and telecommunications industries and the insurance sector. Healthcare management can be improved immensely with the use of data mining. The goal of our study is to discover patterns in the HIV/AIDS treatment among patients in Lesotho. Close monitoring of the disease progression is the most vital aspect as far as curbing fatalities is concerned. Using data mining tools, detailed patient information and treatment records can be used to determine if the course of treatment will work in order to keep a patient alive for a longer period of time.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125620456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since Kenya is a developing country, there is need to manage the sometimes competing interests of development, such as infrastructure development, and conservation. To achieve this, tools to effectively monitor the state of Kenya's various ecosystems are essential. In this paper we propose a biodiversity monitoring software tool that integrates acoustic indices of biodiversity, recognition of species of interest based on their vocalizations and acoustic census. This tool can be used by non-experts to determine the current state of their ecosystems by monitoring the state of bird species that serve as indicator taxa and whose abundance is related to the abundance of other terrestrial vertebrates including the “big five”. The tool we propose exploits state-of-the art advances in signal processing and machine learning to perform biodiversity monitoring, bird species detection and census in a joint framework. Using publicly available data we demonstrate how current acoustic indices of biodiversity can be improved by incorporating machine learning based audio segmentation algorithms. We also show how open source toolkits can be used to build bird species recognition systems. Each teacher working in South Africa is required to sign-up electronically before they participate in their 1st CPTD cycle with each cycle repeated at three year intervals. With the increasing accessibility to online learning for pre-service and in-service teachers, access to CPTD is not limited to SACE endorsed programs and teachers are opting to enroll in less structured opportunities to enhance their own learning experiences through participating in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). With the advent of the MOOC in its many guises and the subsequent proliferation of service providers, there is a pressing need to provide some practical guidance to teachers planning to enrol in a MOOC for their own professional development purposes. This paper reports on pre-service teacher's participation in their first MOOCs as part of their own journey in becoming teachers in the 21st Century. Online and open learning provides many challenges and opportunities for continuous professional development.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"54 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131809911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the constant use of manual and legacy information systems, in South African government departments contributes significantly to poor data quality. This work proposes a conceptual model for improving Data Quality Management in South African government departments. The conceptual model is based on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework. A key feature of the model is the recognition of the importance of inter-governmental systems integration/interface, electronic capturing of data and user biometric access control to improving Data Quality Management in government departments.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129500818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deployment and use of mobile technology in these countries offers an opportunity to use it to improve timeliness of report sent to the next level. The aim of this study is to assess the use of mobile technology for improving timeliness of reports in one district in Malawi. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, observations, field notes and document review. DHIS2 mobile implementation has shown some positive results concerning knowledge and skills development; improved timeliness of reports; reduction in the cost of sending reports and delegation of responsibility in data entry from the district to the health facility. The deployment of mobile technology for reporting requires appropriate technical, behavioural and organizational factors to effectively contribute to improved timeliness of reports.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129916893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the study was to design a framework for the acceptance process of DHIS for VHPs. The study was qualitative in nature. The framework presented puts forward three phases in which DHIS acceptance goes through i.e. attitude, adoption and acceptance. It discusses the main focus in each phase: individual and organisation for the attitude phase, organisation in the adoption phase, and the individual for the acceptance phase. It goes ahead to describe the important considerations in each phase and facilitating conditions for the whole process which are clear management goals, collaboration among stakeholders, availability of resources and funds, clear guidelines and monitoring and evaluation of each phase of the process.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131030997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
