It targets especially favorable radio channel environments with the possibility to use higher order modulation and higher code rates. Furthermore fast retransmissions and enhanced scheduling algorithms can be used to boost data rates and to provide the required quality of service (QoS). A dynamic W-CDMA system level simulator has been extended to enable the simulation of packet switched services with special focus on HSDPA. The complete simulation system contains traffic sources that create sequences of packets for each active user equipment (UE), models the protocol stack and provides the possibility to collect performance indicators, e.g. sector packet data throughput, page throughput, and packet delays, in different scenarios for offline analysis. The simulation tool will be described and some example results concerning packet data performance of HSDPA will be shown.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. As a preliminary research work on the next generation mobile communications and services, we exploit the next generation mobile services. We define the next generation mobile services as strata of services consisting of three different service levels, the service areas, the service functionalities, and the service technologies. We derive these service levels by means of the scenario based analysis. Finally, we propose a conceptual network architecture that can support the next generation mobile services by placing network functions and service elements within the network.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. In order to enable a flexible exploitation of the envisaged large transmission bandwidths, a sub-division of the available bandwidth into sub-bands through FDMA (frequency division multiple access) is seen as a very promising solution. Within each sub-band, an MC-multiple access system can be accommodated. Recently, an efficient adaptive sub-band allocation (ASBA) approach has been shown to provide a significant performance gain in such systems. A system design method is proposed that yields, for each propagation scenario, the proper number of sub-bands, such that a given performance gain can be attained through ASBA.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. However, in the frequency-selective fading environments, the error probability performance of OFDM is severely degraded by the subcarriers where the deep fading occurs. In order to deal with this issue, we propose a coded frequency-domain link adaptation scheme for OFDM packet transmission in the time division duplex (TDD) mode. This scheme is based on the concatenation of the channel coding and the adaptive bit and power loading. The simulation results show the proposed scheme can significantly improve the packet error rate (PER) performance compared with other schemes. Further investigations also show that it can contribute to large performance gain even in the challenging high-speed environments.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. Our aim is to improve both the convergence speed and the bit error rate (BER) performance of the conventional blind adaptive MMOE receiver in asynchronous AWGN channels. The proposed receiver structure makes use of the available knowledge of all users' spreading codes (i.e., at the base-station) to cancel multiple access interference (MAI) using a combined adaptive MMOE-PIC algorithm. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the long training period requirement of the conventional adaptive MMOE receiver due to both the asynchronous transmission and the near-far problem. The BER of the proposed system is evaluated using the Gaussian approximation. Moreover, the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the conventional blind trained method. Both numerical and theoretical results show that the proposed receiver performs close to the standard minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver whereas the adaptive MMOE detector suffers from a higher BER due to the imperfect filter coefficients.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. In this report, we aim to clarify the stochastic characteristics of the difference between the received levels of the sector antenna in order to control handover appropriately. Furthermore, we propose a model of the changes in the incoming waves to evaluate the handover threshold. The proposed model is the angle profile expressed by the Laplacian function where each wave has a lognormal distribution. The difference in the received levels calculated using the proposed model agrees well with the results calculated using measured angle profiles.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. Two design structures are considered: the so called \"separate detection\" consists in using a particular adaptive filter structure for each carrier, whereas the so called \"joint detection\" is based on a joint structure defined by the concatenation of the adaptive filter weights dedicated to each carrier. We carry out a comparative study between both structures with various adaptive filters such as recursive least square (RLS), Normalized least mean square (NLMS) and affirm projection algorithm (APA). The simulation results show that a compromise has to be found between performance and computational cost. The so called \"joint detection\" scheme provides the best performance in terms of bit error rate (BER). Although NLMS has the lowest computational cost, it is outperformed by APA and RLS when considering the convergence rate or/and excess mean square error. Besides, the RLS provides the best performance but at the price of high computational complexity. Therefore, we propose to use APA in a joint structure to design the receiver.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat.
