Although it is impossible to completely be isolated from the male gaze, this paper attempts to return the right to interpret the qipao to women. As a symbol of modernity influenced by Western values, the consumer of the qipao was mainly represented by the emerging urban middle-class women with dual cultural and economic status, and there was intertextuality between the qipao and these female elites. Divided into three main sections, the essay illustrates the identity, design and symbol of the qipao that women functioned to express modernity from their point of view. Taken together, the findings of the study suggest that through the qipao, the middle-class women consciously or unconsciously acquired political identity, and gained participation and recognition in public life. From the perspective of social history, the research may provide a deeper understanding of the social and cultural changes in the Republic of China from the historical phenomenon that the qipao has become synonymous with modern Chinese women.","PeriodicalId":196354,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 3rd International Conference on Language, Art and Cultural Exchange(ICLACE 2022)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121816060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He filmed the series \"It’s Tough Being a Man” – starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as “Tora-san”, a kind-hearted vagabond who is always unlucky in love. The series itself is often referred to as \"Tora-san\" by its fans. Spanning 48 installments released between 1969 and 1995, which is well-known in the Japanese film industry, and is warmly sought after and loved by the audience. Yamada Yoji's films are warm and moving, presenting a harmonious and orderly Japanese society and showing good human relations. Even if the progress of the times has led to various social conflicts, they are often resolved in a peaceful way in the film. Yamada Yoji's film shows us that the little people in Japan's lower-class society live actively according to their own life patterns. Although their living conditions are sympathetic, their attitude towards life is respectable. This article mainly discusses the Japanese social context and its influence reflected in Yamada Yoji's films.","PeriodicalId":196354,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 3rd International Conference on Language, Art and Cultural Exchange(ICLACE 2022)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130698705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translating the idioms of a language into a target language accurately is a complex problem. Adopting the functional equivalence theory under the framework of social semiotics, this research discusses potential translation methods and strategies and the significance of functional equivalence in the English translation of Chinese idioms. Existing literature points out that pragmatic meaning is the most critical meaning of Chinese idioms. Translators should prioritize the accurate transmission of practical meaning. On this premise, both intralingual meaning and referential meaning should be considered. Some thoughts on the strategies of translating Chinese idioms into English are put forward using comparative and inductive research methods.","PeriodicalId":196354,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 3rd International Conference on Language, Art and Cultural Exchange(ICLACE 2022)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132230943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay analyses the nihilistic tendencies of the characters and their unconscious movements in the postmodern war space in Tim O'Brien's “How to Tell a True War Story” and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five by applying the 'new machine' perspective proposed by Fredric Jameson in The Cultural Turn . With reference to Khatin-Zadeh Omid’s understanding of movement and non-movement, Fredric Jameson's point remains valid within the macro-concept of movement, which includes the transient cessation of movement. This research will provide a new interpretation of the visualisation of nihilistic tendencies within characters in postmodern texts.","PeriodicalId":196354,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 3rd International Conference on Language, Art and Cultural Exchange(ICLACE 2022)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123641117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
