For explaining the scheme, we firstly discuss the old tangram puzzle and present how to transform between two different images. Then based on Conway' game, we present a scrambling technique which helps to hide the transform information. The advantage of this method is its security.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. This model inherits the partial size invariance of the standard HMM, and, due to its pseudo two-dimensional structure, is able to model two-dimensional data such as images, better than the standard HMM. We describe the maximum likelihood training for the continuous mixture embedded HMM and present the performance of this model for face detection and recognition. The experimental results are compared with other approaches to face detection and recognition.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. These segments can be used for efficient summarization of video objects and/or retrieval of video objects by their motion. The proposed algorithm is based on the shape and texture coding modes of inter coded video object planes. Because the employed filtering techniques are simple and full decoding of the MPEG-4 bitstream is not required, the algorithm is computationally efficient.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. In the GNT learning process, the whole tree structure is considered at each learning step, and the entire training set is used to update each node. The main novelty of the proposed approach is that the output obtained when a pattern is presented to the network has a probabilistic interpretation. Experimental tests have been performed by applying the GNT in the context of a visual-based surveillance system for outdoor scenes. In particular, objects moving in the observed scene are firstly classified into 5 different categories. Then, the trajectory of such objects, together with the class information is provided to a second GNT which gives a final interpretation of the scene in terms of presence of dangerous situations.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. The segmentation problem is formulated as minimization of an energy function synonymous to that of HNN for optimization. We modify the HNN to reach a status close to the global minimum in a prespecified time of convergence. The energy function is constructed with two terms, the cost-term as a sum of squared errors and the second term a temporary noise added to the network as an excitation to escape certain local minima to be close to the global minimum. Each lung color image is represented in RGB and HSV color spaces and the segmentation results are comparatively presented. Furthermore, the nuclei are automatically extracted based on the features of the color image histogram. The nuclei are the most component in the lung tissue.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. The algorithm is simple and provides good results. The 2-D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its relatives have been used to generalize the denoising methods to images. However the DWT is limited in its representation of directional information like edges and some types of texture. We propose the use of a directional filter bank for image denoising under the same premise as wavelet thresholding: small magnitude subband coefficients represent noise and can be replaced with zeros while large coefficients reflect, in our case, strong signal content in a given direction. We show that the directional filter bank is capable of preserving edge information better than DWT based techniques while effectively removing noise. The proposed technique provides sharp images with higher perceptual quality.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. We propose a powerful constructive approach to the watermarking problem, emphasizing the dual rules of distributed source coding with side information at the decoder and channel coding with side information at the encoder. In our framework, we explore various source and channel codes to close the gap on the achievable capacity of watermarking systems. We propose two methods of solution, one which is based on optimal rate-distortion quantizers and the other based on robust optimization and convex programming. The resulting watermarking schemes, when subjected to additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) attacks, achieve results which are comparable to or better than the best watermarking schemes in the literature.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. The need to simulate texture, through its precise micro-level colour variation characteristics, as opposed to simulating and presenting an overall pleasing picture of an object, cannot be over-stressed. This study compares the performance of a high-end and a low-end digital camera in terms of accuracy of colorimetric characterisation and WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) colour texture simulation.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. Using the Sobel operators, these discontinuities can be extracted. After segmentation into smaller blocks of pixels and Fourier transformation into the frequency domain, the blockiness will be translated into harmonics whose amplitude and phase can provide vital information for quantifying the blockiness. The amplitude of the harmonics is proportional to the degree of blockiness, while the phase of the harmonics can be used to verify that the harmonics are not due to contextual details in the picture. By examining both the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics, an accurate blockiness detector that needs no reference pictures has been devised, achieving a high correlation of 0.88 between the model prediction and the subjective data.","PeriodicalId":193198,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat.
