It does not count the citations, means it ignores theimpact of the publications. Since it is easy to calculate,therefore it is still being used for academic promotions inPakistan and other countries. h-index: To overcome the problems mentioned in the introduction, Jorge E. Hirsch, a physicist from University of California, USA has developed a reasonably better criterion of a scientist’s productivity and citations, known as h-index 1 ,which is defined as: A scientist has index h if h of his/her Np articles have at least h citations each and the other (Np-h) articles haveless than h citations each. It is robust (unaffected by many uncited articles, as well as some highly cited articles) and it mingled by publicationsand citations. Hence, this index supports those scientistswho publish a continuous stream of articles with persistingand above average impact. 2 A further advantage of h index To measure the contribution of a scientist is not only an academic exercise. It helps greatly to the promotion committees, funding agencies, and national & international awarding commissions. Many citations indices have been developed to determine the contribution and impact of scientists' researches. This review article covers 27 citation indices, and computed 23 indices which are not very difficult to compute. Values of these indices are calculated using the author's citations. To determine the quality of research performance it is suggested to use several indices and indicators, instead of only one. However, there is dire need to develop a better index which should be easy to calculate and reduce the drawbacks of h related indices.","PeriodicalId":191918,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Pakistan Dental Association","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114071674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The density of Candida in individuals using prosthesis is very important in terms of infection development. As denture stomatitis is a multifactorial disease, so denture wearing, along with many other factors, involves in the changes of candidal count. Determine the candidalcount after providing the patients with complete dentures as quantification of candidal count is helpful in differentiating between colonization and infection. METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted in Department of Prosthodontics, Punjab Dental Hospital, Lahore. 155 edentulous patients visiting the Prosthodontic department were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Before insertionof complete dentures, oral sample were taken using the oral rinse technique. The sample was inoculated on Sabouraud's agar, and incubated at 220C for 48 hrs. The number of colonies characteristic of Candida was counted. Denture hygiene instructions given. The patients were recalled after three months and the same oral sampling and culture technique were employed. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients that were included in the study was 57.97 ±4.99 years. In this study majority of the patients were male and constituted almost 80% of the sample population. The mean colony forming units before provision of complete dentures were 19.75 with a standard deviation of 12.30, this is considerably less than colony forming units afterprovision of complete dentures which was 165.37 with a standard deviation of 73.85. CONCLUSION: Denture wearing with meticulous oral hygiene in elderly individuals is of great concern in controlling candidalgrowth. Denture removal at night is recommended to help in eliminating the source of the infectious agent.","PeriodicalId":191918,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Pakistan Dental Association","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122513856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pregnancy is a dynamic condition of female body causing a number of physiologic changes. These physiologic changes lead to numerous oral conditions1,3-7 shown in figure 1. Good maternal health is certainly one of the important determinants in lowering rate of pregnancy related complications. Improving oral health during pregnancy not only proves to be supportive but also decreases pregnancy related complications like pre-term birth, pre-eclampsia, morbidity and mortality of infants.1,3,8,9 Studies show that 50% of pregnant women develop oral diseases. It has been shown that bacteria (MutantStreptococci MS) is responsible for early childhood caries, transmitted from mother's saliva and rate of transmission increase if she bears poor oral hygiene with untreated dental caries.3 Otherpredisposing factors are poor diet, alcohol, smoking, betel nut chewing and gutka consumption. The results will be compared with findings in previous studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine mental foramen location using volumetrically rendered Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective study composed of data from 200 scans of patients which were referred to the oral and maxillofacial radiology clinic. Localization was done bilaterally based on the relationship between the mental foramen and posterior teeth in their long axes. six possible position were identified (Position 1: anterior to the first premolar, Position 2: in line with the first premolar, Position 3: between premolars, Position 4: in line with the second premolar, Position 5: between second premolar and first molar, Position 6: in line with first molar). For analysis descriptive statistic were used (mean and frequency).RESULTS: In total, 200 scans were analyzed, 112 (56%) were females and 88 (44%) males with a mean age of 32.5 years (±13.1). Four hundred sites were assessed. The most common position of the mental foramen was in line with the second premolar (position 4) with a prevalence of 45.5%, followed by position 3 (41.5%). The prevalence of the other mental foramen position types combined (type 1, 2, 5 and 6) were 13% .bilateral symmetry was noted in 71% of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: Mental foramen location can be variable therefore, clinicians should be aware about this variation before surgical procedures involving mental foramen region. CBCT is recommended to avoid possible complication. The study was conducted retrospectively from CBCT scans of 200 patients seen in the Oral and Maxillofacial The CBCT examinations were originally done for various reasons, more commonly, implant site assessment, TMJ, orthognathic surgery preoperative assessment. It results from proliferation and subsequent deposition of an acute-phase protein called serum amyloid A in tissues. Clinical features are usually slow to develop. The first manifestations are usually proteinuria and renal dysfunction. The severity of renal involvement determines prognosis of the patient. Liver and heart involvement may also be seen.1,2 Oral involvement with secondary amyloidosis is exceedingly rare. The most frequently affected site is the tongue. The protein deposition usually results in generalized or nodular macroglossia. More diffuse involvement of the oral cavity has also been reported as yellow nodules, or generalized ulceration.3,4 Here we present a case of a 63-year-old Pakistani female who was first diagnosed with secondary amyloidosis following a biopsy of her oral nodules, despite being under the care of multiple physicians for her systemic complaints. The proportion of older people has increased in correspondence to the total population. Approximately 600 million people are of 60 or above worldwide and this number is expected to be doubled by 2025. The process of ageing is relentless leading to inconsistent homeostasis, raised susceptibility to chronic diseases alongwith decreased reconciliation to external environmental stimuli which affects bodily organs and systems. All these aspects are consociated with more predisposition to systemic diseases and death.1,2 Several current studies indicate that association is existing between oral diseases and systemic chronic diseases.3 Agonies of old age can be reduced by treating oral diseases alongwith systemic chronic diseases. Despite many advancements in preventive and conservative dentistry, various oral diseases like dental caries, tooth wear lesions, periodontal diseases, trauma and tumors of the jaw lead to loss of many teeth and ultimately edentulism.2 The most common treatment worldwide for edentulism is removable complete denture.2,4 Maintenance of optimum oral health in denture wearers becomes more difficult which can lead to malodor, poor esthetics, accumulation of plaque/calculus on denture, soft tissue pathologies and even complete failure of the prosthesis.
