The quantizer model that consists of a compander and a uniform quantizer is utilized. The case of large number of quantization points is considered, and we use Bennett's and Gersho's approximation to the mean rth power distortion measure. We demonstrate that the piecewise linear compander provides robust quantization for the class of all input probability distributions having only their quantiles specified. The optimum robust solution is provided through the determination of all the required parameters. The problem is resolved for the case of block quantizers as well, and we show that the robust solution corresponds to a piecewise constant output point density function. The least favorable input multivariable density function is the piecewise uniform one.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125521633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theory for modeling the capacitance of interdigitated structure in the prepense of anisotropic LC film is presented. The use of the neuro-fuzzy to track the director axis as well as the order parameter via capacitive sensing is investigated. Three capacitance calculations at different molecular profiles are required to train the neuro-fuzzy system. Three capacitance measurements are required to track the average molecular orientation using the trained neuro-fuzzy systems.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128871104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous work has shown that PM motors with \"sufficiently high\" inductance, if operated with conventional phase advancement [4] method, can widen the CPSR significantly [3]. Compared to traditional vector control, this method is computationally very simple and does not involve any transformations. Only speed and rotor angle feedback is needed to produce the required power. It does not require any motor current or voltage feedback. Surface PM machines with distributed windings have lower phase winding inductance. Recently a method has been developed to use fractional slot concentrated windings to significantly increase the surface PM machine inductance [5]. The increased inductance method is compatible with a voltage source inverter (VSI) controlled by the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM).This paper presents the analysis of the CPA controller for high inductance PM machines for traction drive application.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130808436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The metal-fill profile plays an important role in the casting quality and hence monitoring that profile is important to quickly discover failures in the process. A monitoring process based on electrical capacitive tomography (ECT) is developed by the research team. In ECT an array of capacitance measuring circuits is used to measure the mutual capacitance between the electrodes mounted around a target area. This paper presents a new high resolution capacitance measuring circuit with wide bandwidth developed to measure the inter-electrode capacitance changes produced as the grounded molten metal progresses within the target area. The developed circuit minimizes the effect of the stray capacitance while increasing the range of frequencies at which the circuit can be operated. This is particularly important to allow multiple circuits to operate simultaneously at different frequencies within the same flask. An illustrative example for use of tomography to monitor metal fill is presented.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130941924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 3D image perception is a key in the ability to manipulate in remote environments. By using two video cameras and a special stereoscopic shuttering glass, three dimensional images can be displayed on a CRT monitor for assisting manipulation tasks. An important mission of a bomb disposal robot is for searching and removing explosive devices. During an actual telecontrol of a robot, the operator must stay far away from a dangerous area and watching a 2D image displayed on the monitor. It was found that 2D image introduced a depth error while operators try to manipulate the object or positioning a robot arm for aiming a disruptor to neutralize an electronics components of suspected objects. These problems can be remedied by using a 3-D stereoscopic image. This paper presents testing results of using 3-D stereoscopic image for EOD robot operations. Experiment results are indicated that 3-D image are suitable for aiding operators see realistic 3-D image and operators can perform a manipulating task successfully.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134280565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aluminum samples contain holes of 0.25\" in diameter aligned in a row used to demonstrate this technique. The distance between the centers of two adjacent holes is 0.75\". First sample has two 0.125\" thick layers. A 0.06\" long corner crack is located in one of the layers at the edge of a hole. The height of the corner crack is 0.04\". Three configurations were tested to detect the corner crack at three different depths within the structure: a) at the bottom of the first layer; b) at the top of the second layer: c) at the bottom of the second layer. The second sample is a single layer and has a 0.25\" in thickness and 0.075\" long corner crack is located at the bottom of the sample; the height of the crack is 0.04\". A GMR sensor is located above the coil containing the defect, at a distance equal to the mean radius from the center of the coil. The sensitive axis of the magnetic sensor was oriented tangential to the hole. The probe was then rotated about the axis of the hole containing the defect. Two circular coils of different mean diameter were used for this probe. The frequency and phase were optimized to detect corner cracks at different depths of the structure.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114541373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One model treats the gravitational field as constant over the volume of the robot and another model uses 0th order Taylor series expansions of a continuous gravitational field over the volume of the robot. A third model neglects the effects of gravity. The three models are then simulated in a free-fall condition. The developed software includes wavelet transform-based feature extraction from C-scan images with known crack length and computing the energy associated with wavelet coefficient feature data. The feature data were then nonlinearly modeled using feed-forward neural network for the estimation of crack lengths. The results obtained are very promising and the method can be applied for online monitoring and estimation of micro crack sizes. The smallest crack size estimated was 200 mum within 10% estimation error. Due to limitation of resolution of the sensors, all measurements were performed in the millimeter range and images were resized again to simulate crack sizes in the micro-meter scale.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131921259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon was predicted in a recent paper [1] using simulation results. The present paper verifies those results using real data. The ability to resolve two closely-spaced scatterers is measured using a defined quantity called peak separation quality. The present paper derives an expression for peak separation quality for the synthetic wideband waveforms used at the collection facility. This quantity is shown to vary in a predictable way as a function of both frequency and bandwidth. Data examples verify this result. This phenomenon is significant for wideband distributed aperture applications that use frequency variation to achieve waveform diversity.","PeriodicalId":188817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SoutheastCon 2008","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132969903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
