The works of art created by doctors bore the imprint of a professional view of the body and soul of a human being, saturated the texts with medical realities and terms, which gave reason to talk about the medical text in Russian literature. At the same time, the erudition of doctors and scientists allowed them to use examples from fiction in their scientific papers, thus giving rise to a literary text in medicine. Literary and medical discourses interacted in works on the study of higher nervous activity, in psychiatry and psychology. Since the last quarter of the 20th century, the study of fiction has been regarded as an obligatory part of the academic discipline “Medical Humanities”. In the universities of the Russian Federation and abroad, special manuals and readers were created, which were based on fiction written by trained doctors such as A. P. Chekhov, M. A. Bulgakov, V. V. Veresaev, and also those writers who described complex physiological processes and conditions without special medical training – L. N. Tolstoy, F. M. Dostoevsky, A. I. Kuprin, A. I. Solzhenitsyn and others. The study of the elements of the poetics of a literary text, its plot, metaphors and symbols began to be used in the training of doctors in the course of narrative medicine. The article concludes the growing interpenetration and mutual influence of literary and medical discourses. In the first quarter of the 21st century, Russian literature turned out to be an indispensable resource for countering the dehumanization and commercialization of medicine, as well as preserve empathy and philanthropy in future doctors.","PeriodicalId":187515,"journal":{"name":"Culture and Text","volume":"221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115993290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research specifies the semantics of the new drink had as revealed in the works of the pioneers of the Russian coffee theme: A. Kant emir, G. Derzhavin, N. Novikov. It is established how the authors’ evaluation of coffee changed depending on the dynamics of the cultural context: as an initial negative-satirical assessment of the love for coffee of a sybarite nobleman (A. Kantemir), was then supplemented with a positive assessment: the aroma of coffee is a component of the Poet’s happy life in the idyllic world of the manor (G. Derzhavin).","PeriodicalId":187515,"journal":{"name":"Culture and Text","volume":"33 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115637778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The empirical material is represented by a corpus of examples, found in the works of Margaret Atwood, in which simile appears to be one of the main means of the author’s individual style and, consequently, a key to the reconstruction of the author’s world view. The complex analysis of the corpus enables us to illustrate the role of simile in the representation of the author’s conceptual system. The totality of these concepts forms the basis of the author’s worldview, that has a heterogeneous character, combining the universal, culture-specific and individual components which serve as the source sphere of similes.","PeriodicalId":187515,"journal":{"name":"Culture and Text","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124055408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A. Fet and his friend I. P. Borisov, reflected in their correspondence between 1849 and 1850. Parallels are found with the family picture in the comedy “Woe from Wit” and the images of Molchalin and Chatsky. The way Fet percepted Griboedov is commented as well as his use of winged words borrowed from the comedy “Woe from Wit”. The meaning of Griboedov’s nomination of “a ready-witted observer of the impossible” is revealed. The biographies and life circumstances of the characters of the comedy are analysed; in the context of Griboedov’s works and a historical perspective, the images of the candidates for the hand of Sophia and their life strategies are interpreted, various interpretations of the image of Molchalin are noted. The innovation of Griboedov connected with the destruction of the moral perspectives in the traditional literary plot focused on the triumph of “the virtue” and the punishment of “the vice” is demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":187515,"journal":{"name":"Culture and Text","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115374934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
