Thepatient complain- edabout facialaesthetics and convexprofile, andhadboth lower first molars extracted about 2 years ago. There was agenitionof the right upper first premolar,deep bite and anterior crossbite. Clinicalexamination showed a Class I relationship forthe teeth and cephalometric measurementsshowed a Class IIskeletal tendency.The left upper first premolar was extracted for anterior crowding correction andoverbitecorrection. Thespace ofthe missing lower first molar was used for correction oflower crowd- ing.A two-step extraction technique was used to correct the patient's verticalplaneandprofile. It is concludedthat upper first premolar extraction is one of the options in the treatment of crowding. Unilateral extraction treatment can be performed to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and functionally stable occlusion.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case report aims to describe the management of herpes zoster in preventing postherpetic complications in the elderly. A 64-year-old man complained of blisters on his left face and canker sores on the palate and inner cheek for 1 week ago. Two days earlier accompanied by fever 390C. Extraoral examination revealed a hemorrhagic serous crust on the left face, intraoral examination showed multiple ulcers with erosive lesions on the palate, left buccal mucosa and gingiva. The extraoral and in-traoral lesions are unilateral. The working diagnosis of this case was herpes zoster et left orofacial region. The therapy was gi-ven valacyclovir tablets 800mg 5 times/day, NaCl 0.9% compress on the face, and vitamin B complex with zinc. Improve-ment occurred after 1 week of treatment. Appropriate management of herpes zoster in elderly patient can prevent complica-tions of post herpetic neuralgia that most often occur in the elderly.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139353036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is the most widely consumed beverage in the world communities; green tea and black tea are commonly known. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of rin-sing the decoction water of green tea and black tea to decrease halitosis. The method used is quasi-experimental study in which subjects was 50 people, divided into two groups: 25 person rinse with decoction water of green tea and 25 person rinse with de-coction water of black tea. Measuring the level of the halitosis in all samples taken before and after treatment. The results show-ed that there were significant differences between the two treatment groups, ie sig. 0.048 amounted less than 5% (p<0.05). The conclusion is rinsing using decoction water of green tea is more effective to eliminate halitosis than rinsing using decoction wa-ter of black tea.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"69 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several studies have tried adding nanoparticles to acrylic resins to over-come these problems. This review discusses the effect of nanoparticle addition on the antimicrobial properties of orthodontic removable acrylic resin. A literature review was conducted on 10 articles obtained from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar by determining inclusion, exclusion and keyword criteria. Literature search using boolean search based on inclusion criteria obtained data that the addition of various nanoparticle materials such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide produces good antimicrobial properties, especially in the process of inhibiting microbial adhesion. It is concluded that the addi-tion of nanoparticles to acrylic resin orthodontic appliances provides effective antimicrobial properties so that it can be applied clinically to prevent diseases in the oral cavity such as gingivitis and dental caries.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"50 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the total functional effect caused by extrac-tion and orthodontic treatment remains unclear. This study is aimed to explain the effect of orthodontic treatment with and with-out extraction procedures on dental morphology and masticatory function. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional study design, consisting of pre- and post-treatment groups (25 cases of extraction and 22 cases of non-extraction); and the long-itudinal study consisted of 23 extraction cases and 3 non-extraction cases. Morphological and functional recording was carried out with several assessments, including irregularity index values, masticatory efficiency, number of occlusal contacts, and EMG analysis. Cross sectional, irregularity index showed a significant decrease in malocclusion (p<0.005). There was no significant change in masticatory efficiency. The occlusal contacts of extraction cases (A and C) tend to increase. The activity of the tem-poral (T) muscle was greater than that of the masseter (M) on EMG analysis. Almost all the results from the longitudinal stu-dies support the results from the cross-sectional studies. Results showed functional data immediately after extraction and amidst dynamic treatment decreased with occlusion instability. Both extraction and non-extraction cases improved morphologically and functionally after orthodontic treatment. It can be concluded that extraction of 4 premolars is not always associated with a negative impact on stomatognathic function when proper orthodontic treatment is performed after extraction.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is triggered by several components such as encountering unfami-liar adults, unfamiliar sounds and feelings, having to lie down for treatment, discomfort, and even pain. So that the need for be-havior management in pediatric patients in dental procedures. This case discusses the behavior management of a 6-year-old child who is accompanied by his mother and will undergo dental restoration treatment (ART). It is known that the child has a his-tory of unpleasant dental treatment and traumatizes the child in dental treatment. During the treatment process in dealing with the child's attitude, a combination of several behavior management techniques was applied such as tell-show-do, use of second lang-uage, and the presence of parents, where the application of these techniques succeeded in influencing the child's attitude which at the first appointment was negative to become positive at the second appointment and definitely positive at the third appoint-ment. It is concluded that it is important for dentists to analyze the proper technique in dealing with the behavior of pediatric patients so that dental treatment can run well and effectively.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"59 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139353013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Orthodontic treatment like any other medical treatment can pose a risk to the patient, due to errors that occur during treatment. This literature review aimed to determine the errors that can occur during orthodontic treatment and the risks they can pose to patients. Scientific information relevant to the study topic was collected and synthesized into an article. In general, errors can originate from orthodontic treat-ment, including the type of appliance used, the direction and amount of force applied, the skill of the clinician and the length of treatment. Errors can also originate from the patient, namely biological and behavioral factors of the patient. It is concluded that orthodontic treatment errors and patient factors can cause risks to patients during orthodontic treatment, namely periodontal da-mage, pain, root resorption, tooth devitalization, temporomandibular joint disorders, caries, and enamel damage. A good under-standing of treatment procedures, diagnosis and patient informed consent is needed in order to minimize the risks of orthodon-tic treatment that can occur in patients.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medications commonly used for vital pulpotomy are mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), formocresol and calcium hydoxide. This literature review discusses the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments. In this literature review, articles were collected using Google Scholar and Pubmed with the keywords vital pulpotomy, mineral tri-oxide aggregate, formocresol, and calcium hydroxide with the inclusion criteria being articles published in 2013-2021, availa-able in full-text, and written in both Indonesian and English. It was concluded that the success rate of MTA, formocresol, and Ca(OH)2 as vital pulpotomy medicaments was seen clinically and radiographically, and all three materials had a high success rate. However, MTA can be said to have a higher success rate because clinically and radiographically it does not show failure compared to other medicaments.","PeriodicalId":18170,"journal":{"name":"Makassar Dental Journal","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
