At low temperature, where emission linewidth is expected to be below 0.2 meV, direct linewidth measurements are not possible, due to insufficient spectrometer resolution and spectral diffusion of the emission wavelength. To obtain a higher resolution, Michelson interferometer is used. This study shows how the medium response is critically determined by the initial relative phase between the input laser fields. In particular, depending on the value of the phase the optical length of the medium can differ by orders of magnitude, and the medium can be thus transparent or opaque. This trap is made of two counter-propagating Nd:YAG laser beams (/spl lambda/= 1064 nm) which give rise to a chain of potential wells with a depth of about 1 mK and an axial spacing of 532 nm. In particular, this study shows that transversely modulated structures can suppress completely the off-axis emission associated with modulation instabilities and pattern formation. In this research different closed transitions of the /sup 133/Cs D/sub 2/ line are analysed with a probe and a coupling laser. A phenomenological computational model of the dispersion pattern is also developed, which gives good agreement with the taken measurements.
