As opposed to traditional WLANs, the access points (APs) in these networks are often deployed by network non-specialists in an uncoordinated manner, leading to unplanned topology, interference and unsatisfactory throughput performance. \u0000 \u0000We consider in this paper a distributed channel assignment algorithm for uncoordinated WLANs, where APs can self-configure their operating channels to minimize interference. We propose an efficient, simple and distributed algorithm termed CACAO (Client-Assisted Channel Assignment Optimization). In CACAO, an AP makes use of the traffic information fed back by its clients to make channel assignment decision. This leads to better knowledge on network environment and better channel assignment decision at the APs. We conduct extensive simulation study and comparisons using Network Simulator 2 (NS2). Our results show that CACAO out-performs other traditional and recent schemes in terms of throughput with similar level of fairness. Furthermore, it converges quite fast to reduce interference to a low level.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131345009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, the varying methods of viewing, interacting with, and sharing content have diverged. This paper introduces neXtream, a new approach to delivering video by integrating multiple devices, content sources, and social networks. This concept is developed following research in social television and converged applications, providing both personalization features and social interaction. NeXtream delivers video by dynamically generating streams of video customized to a viewer, while facilitating a common dialog between users around the content, creating both a userand community-centric viewing experience. NeXtream integrates smartphones, PCs, and TVs to deliver video content to viewers. The paper presents the system concept, theory, and architecture, and describes the developed prototype.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133924791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A popular method to compensate for temporary insufficient data throughput is dropping of B-frames. However, this method cannot be applied for encrypted commercial content, because frame types cannot be identified due to encryption of frame headers. Dropping I-frames or P-frames is not an option, because the video quality would drop dramatically. We developed a new approach using a sliding window to estimate the types of frames in an encrypted video stream. We validate the approach with probability calculations and extensive testing to demonstrate feasibility. Based on a large set of video sequences, our proposed algorithm drops the right frames in 99.99% of the cases.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123019367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A communication network that allows a user to access these built-in functions and to control the appliances is highly desirable. An ad hoc network can be easily deployed to connect these home appliances. For such a home network, ease of use must be given higher consideration. This paper discusses description based ad-hoc network routing where the nodes are given descriptions or keywords such as living room TV, kitchen oven etc. as identifiers. We propose three description based routing mechanisms: Single Routing Cache, Directional Routing Cache, and Proportional-Directional Routing Cache. Through simulation, we show that in all three methods the message delivery is 100% success in our configuration, but the amount of misdirected messages experienced by each method is different. The Proportional-Directional Routing Cache shows the least message misdirection with most preferable resource usage.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124555858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hybrid pull-push approach has been recently proposed to reduce delay compared to classical pulling method. In this approach, video are divided into substreams and packets are pushed with low delay. There has been little work addressing the scheduling problem on substream assignment. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem on assigning substreams to minimize packet delay. Given heterogeneous contents, delays and bandwidths of parents, we formulate the Substream Assignment (SA) problem to assign substreams to parents with minimum delay. The SA problem can be optimally solved in polynomial time by transforming it into a Max-Weighted Bipartite Matching problem. Simulation results show that our distributed algorithm achieves substantially lower delay as compared with traditional pull and current hybrid pull-push approaches based on greedy algorithm.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127877536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we look at personal mobile devices as an extension to the wireless infrastructure in environments that lack complete infrastructure coverage. We discuss various roles that these devices can play, starting with setting the devices as Internet relays that provide access to other devices not in range of the infrastructure access points. We then investigate server-like functionalities, in which the devices act as communication proxies or information caches in subnets disconnected from the rest of the network. We describe in detail the system architecture and an experimental implementation of these functionalities focusing on the practical issues of building the collective system.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128478892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we use the LDPC code as an outer code, with a convolutional code as an inner code. We decode the convolutional code using a symbol based Log-MAP (Maximum a posteriori probability) decoder, and feed the soft outputs of this decoder into a non-binary Galois Field LDPC decoder. We compare this concatenation scheme using 16 QAM modulation with one using a bit based Log-MAP decoder over Additive White Gaussian Noise (A WGN) and Stanford University Interim (SVI-3) channel model. The new proposed decoding technique has shown improvements for both channel models.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128549838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of information and communication technologies (ICT) is to focus on the new technologies the medical environments, so that it can provide management to accelerate and improve the clinical process. Our contribution is to introduce an approach based on Internet of things (IoT) in medical environments to achieve a global connectivity with the patient, sensors and everything around it. The main goal of this globality feature is to provide a context awareness to make the patient's life easier and the clinical process more effective. To achieve this approach, firstly has been developed an architecture which has been designed to offer great potential and flexibility of communications, monitoring and control. This architecture includes several advanced communication technologies; among them are 6LoWPAN and RFID/NFC, which are the basis ofthe IoT. Moreover the research deal with the problems related to the mobility and security that happens when IoT is applied in medical environments. The mobility issue requires developing a protocol over 6LoWPAN network to be carried out in sensor networks with high specification related with low power consumption and capacity. While in the RFID/NFC technologies need to support secure communications, our proposal is to introduce a set of security techniques and cryptographic SIM card to authenticate, encrypt and sign the communications with medical devices. The preliminary results showed a reduction of time in the handover process with the protocol for mobility defined, by omitting the stages of addressing and simplifying the MIPv6 protocol. In addition to increase the security in the communications carried out by NFC devices enhanced with the inclusion of cryptographic SIM card.","PeriodicalId":172400,"journal":{"name":"2010 7th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115859810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
