Notwithstanding its appeal, passive-sonar-based localization is challenging due to the complexities of underwater acoustic propagation. This work casts broadband underwater source localization as a multitask learning (MTL) problem, where each task refers to a robust sparse signal approximation problem over a single frequency. MTL provides a framework for exchanging information across the individual regression problems and constructing an aggregate (across frequencies) source localization map. Efficient algorithms based on block coordinate descent are developed for solving the localization problem. Numerical tests on the SWellEX-3 dataset illustrate and compare the localization performance of the proposed algorithm to the one of competitive alternatives.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128363416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is formulated as a sparse signal recovery problem with magnitude constraints on the target reflection coefficients, where the signal to be recovered consist of equal size blocks that have the same sparsity profile. A solution is proposed based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), which significantly lowers the computational complexity of sparse recovery and improves the estimation accuracy. Due to the block diagonal structure of the sensing matrix, the iterations of all ADMM subproblems are amenable to parallel implementation, which can reduce the running time. A semi-distributed implementation, which relaxes the need of a powerful fusion center is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128790491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on estimating the sensing-channel from the primary source to the secondary source which helps in determining the reliability of the sensing decision. The channel is estimated opportunistically when the secondary source senses the primary source to be active. We show the improvement in the performance of the secondary system compared to the system with no channel estimation. We also compare the performance to the system in which the channel is estimated accurately at every time slot. We consider the performance criterion to be the consumed energy by the secondary system constrained by a required average data transmission rate for the secondary system and an allowable average failure probability for the primary system.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125507964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This raises the issue of how to combine these imaging types to gain the most useful information for inference. One can perform data integration, where one modality is used to improve the results of another, or true data fusion, where multiple modalities are used to inform one another. We propose two new methods of data fusion, entropy bound minimization (EBM) for joint independent component analysis (jICA) and independent vector analysis with a Gaussian prior (IVA-G), and compare them to the established data fusion techniques of multiset canonical correlation analysis (MCCA) and jICA using Infomax. Additionally, we propose a simulation model and use it to probe the limitations of these methods. Results show that EBM with jICA outperforms the other selected methods but is highly sensitive to the availability of joint information provided by these modalities.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133589207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model is motivated by applications of visible light communication systems, in which the noise level is affected by the strength of the background light. We consider scenarios with and without delay constraints. For the case without a delay constraint, we characterize the optimal power allocation scheme that maximizes the ergodic capacity. For the case with a strict delay constraint, we characterize the optimal power allocation scheme that minimizes the outage probability. We also provide several numerical examples to illustrate the analytical results.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121528012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimal parameters are determined by systematically minimizing a distance measure. As standard distance measures are typically not well defined for discrete densities on continuous domains, we focus on shifting the mass distribution of the approximating density as close to the true density as possible. Instead of globally comparing the masses as in a previous paper, the key idea is to characterize individual Dirac components by kernel functions representing the spread of probability mass that is appropriate at a given location. A distance measure is then obtained by comparing the deviation between the true density and the induced kernel density. This new method for Dirac mixture approximation provides high-quality approximation results, can handle arbitrary pdfs, allows considering constraints for, e.g., maintaining certain moments, and is fast enough for online processing.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129388230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The well-known method of time sharing is discussed first, where the underlying codes are point to point polar codes. We explain how to improve the performance in time sharing using the recently proposed compound polar codes. Then we propose a new scheme in which both users encode their messages using a polar encoder, while a joint successive cancellation decoder is used at the decoder. The polar codes for both users is constructed jointly by treating the whole polar transformation on both users as a single polar transformation, wherein the multiple access channel (MAC) is regarded as one more level of polarization. We prove that our scheme achieves the whole uniform rate region by changing the decoding order in the joint successive cancellation decoder, where the uniform rate region of a MAC is the set of achievable rates assuming that the input distributions are uniform. Some simulation results over binary-additive Gaussian noise MAC are provided. The proposed scheme is compared with the existing results on polar codes for multiple access channels to emphasize the differences and the main advantages of our scheme.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127345096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the optimal rate allocation across multiple paths that maximizes anonymity under fixed delay requirements on individual mixes is investigated analytically. In particular, it is shown that in the high traffic regime, the maximum anonymity is achievable independent of the rate allocation. In the light traffic regime, there exists a unique path for each source node such that the overall anonymity is maximized. When the desired quality of service is expressed as a weighted sum of the anonymity and the end to end delay a low complexity algorithm is proposed to derive the optimal rate allocation under light traffic to maximize the weighted reward.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127577456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a stepping stone we prove a new upper bound to the difference of two mutual information. This class of channels called strong in partial order channels, generalizes the notion of strong channels introduced earlier in the literature in the context of SISO and SIMO Gaussian interference channels. The class of strong in partial order channels, although have an overlap with the class of aligned-strong ICs introduced by Shang et. al., also contain channels which are not aligned-strong. Further, it is proved that using independent and random Gaussian codes at the transmitters and decoding both users messages at the receivers are sufficient to achieve the capacity region on this class of channels. This result enlarges the set of channels for which exact capacity of the 2-user MIMO Gaussian IC can be characterized.","PeriodicalId":169460,"journal":{"name":"2014 48th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems (CISS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133938918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
