However the imperative of healthier and quality smoked products through improved processing method were however investigated. Organoleptic and chemical assessment of African catfish collected from a reputable fish farm in Ogbomoso, Oyo state Nigeria was carried out. Eviscerated and non-eviserated fish samples were smoked using four different smoke sources: Gmelina (Gmnelina arborea), Parkia (Parkia biglobosa), Neem (Azadirachita indica) and charcoal. Overall acceptability was based on 5-point Hedonic scale (excellent (5) - poor (1). Chemical test was on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon contents (benzo(a)pyrene, Fluoranthene, Napthalene, Acenapthalene, Chrysene and Benzo(ghi) perylene). Data were subjected to one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using general linear mode (GLM) of Factorial Experimental Design and means were separated by Duncan’s multiple range tests (P<0.05). Non- eviscerated smoked African catfish samples had lower scores for colour than eviscerated smoked samples for energy sources used. Eviscerated samples had mean scores of 4.64, 3.91, 3.36 and 2.82 for charcoal, Gmelina, Neem and Parkia smoked samples respectively, much better than scores of 4.36, 2.46, 2.36 and 2.27 obtained for non-eviscerated samples. Total concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were highest in samples produced using Gmelina as smoke source and Neem for eviscerated (15.25 µg/kg) and non-eviscerated (29.43 µg/kg) samples respectively. Evisceration of fish prior to smoking enhances its sensory characteristics however; concentrations of PAHs for both eviscerated and non-eviscerated fish samples were within the recommended international standard limit.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"109 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This fish often becomes prey for predatory fish. In efforts to reveal the relationship between predators and prey in food webs and food chains, there is still limited information due to the difficulty of identifying digested food. In connection with this, this study aims to identify the morphology shape index value otolith of Japanese threadfin bream. Sampling was carried out at the Labuang Maros Fish Landing Site with 150 samples and morphometric data were collected from 150 pairs of otoliths in April and May 2023. The calculation of the shape index uses six descriptors, which include form factor (FF), roundness (RO), circularity or compactness (C), rectangularity (Rt), ellipticity (E), and aspect ratio (AR). The results showed that there was no significant difference in the otolith morphometry of the right and left otoliths (P>0.05). Based on the shape index value obtained, it explains that the morphometric shape of the otolith of Japanese threadfin bream tends to be oval, elongated, and has an irregular surface.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"110 37","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141125959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study will analyze the trend for length of Claria gariepinus fed on commercial feed, maggot and zooplankton; analyze the trend of weight of Claria gariepinus fed on commercial feed, maggot and zooplankton; analyze the relationship between length and weight and; make forecasts for the length and weight of the fish fed on the specified feed types. Artificial reproduction of African Catfish (C geriepinus) was carried out using the hypophysation technique. Brood stocks were selected from centrally located parent stock holding ponds. Males and females were conditioned in separate ponds. The brood stocks were fed with 20% crude protein formulated feed, acclimatized for three weeks, then transferred into the hatchery holding tanks between 240 Celsius and 270 Celsius to stimulate ovulation after injecting the females with 0.5ml of ovalin. Fertilized eggs were incubated in continuous flow of water until hatching was completed. A commercial starter feed consisting of 8% ash, 6% fiber, 12% NFE, 1.5% calcium, 1.6% sodium, 1.5% phosphorous and sufficient amount of essential vitamins was administered to the larvae. Larvae were randomly distributed into 45 plastic tanks in a flow-through system at a density of 500 fish per tank. Fifteen fries were randomly selected from each holding tank and measurements on weight and length collected daily. Time series analysis and regression analysis were applied in the study. It was found that the length and weight of post larvae fed on mixed zooplankton was consistently lower than the other treatments. The length and weight of the fish fed on the three feed types were successfully modeled and forecasts made for future five periods while the relationship between length and weight was found to be significant on a linear regression model. This certainly adds value as the weight of post larvae catfish is measure with less difficulty and without causing injury or stress to the fish than measurement of length.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"33 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139387114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four fish feeds were formulated and produced using three conventional fish feed formulation methods namely Pearson’s Square feed formulation method and two other conventional fish feed softwares, WINFEEDTM, ALLIXTM and a developed software (FUTA AQUAFEEDAPP); the software was developed using data analytical tools: simple harmonic equation, linear programming and stochastic programming techniques. The nutrient composition of the four diets were evaluated in the laboratory. The result of the proximate analyses indicated that the four diets met the crude protein requirements for African Catfish fingerlings, the values ranged from 40.68±0.62 (Pearson square) to 40.98±0.86 (ALLIX). There were no significant differences in the moisture content, crude protein, crude fibre, crude lipid and NFE across all treatments, however there was significant difference in the ash content across the four diets. The result of the cost assessment across the four treatments were significantly different, it revealed that AQUAFEED had the lowest investment cost ($1/Kg) when compared with the three other treatments, while Pearson Square had the highest investment cost ($1.5/kg) due to the high inclusion of fishmeal in the diet.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"30 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139385330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One male and one female C. gariepinus brood stock weighing 1.0 kg and 1.3 kg respectively, were used for the experiment. Three different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) of tannin extract from Cape gooseberry root were used. Tannic acid (0.75g) diluted in 1 litre of water was used as reference de-adhesion agent, while water was used as control. The fish eggs were rinsed with the solutions at different durations of 0.5, 1 and 2 minutes. Each concentration and rinsing time was recorded in triplicates. Data generated were subjected to Univariate Analysis of Variance Test, and third order Polynomial regression analysis was then used to determine the best concentration and immersion period that neutralizes adhesiveness in eggs of C. gariepinus. Results of the study showed that there were no significant differences (p≤0.05) in the non-adhesive eggs and hatching of eggs immersed in tannin extract from Cape gooseberry root and Tannic acid solution but significantly different from the control. Research on the effect of using MFNC on the growth and health performance of Spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano has never existed, so a study was conducted with the aim of comparing the growth and health performance of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano in floating net cage (FNC) and MFNC cultivation systems. The research method used was a field experiment with a comparative analysis of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano cultivation with different cultivation systems, namely the MFNC and FNC systems with 3 replications. The rearing lasted for 2 months and was fed trash fish as much as 5% of the biomass every day. Parameters of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano growth performance observed included weight growth, carapace length growth, total length growth, and specific growth rate. The health status of spiny lobsters observed quantitatively was the total hemocytes counts and hemolymph glucose levels, and Snubnose pompano by counting erythrocytes and blood leukocytes. The results showed that there was no difference in growth performance, survival and health status of spiny lobsters and Snubnose pompano reared using MFNC and FNC systems based on paired two sample for means, because p value > 0.05 for all growth parameters survival and health status. Thus, the use of a multilevel floating net cage system in lobster cultivation can increase FNC productivity and be efficient in optimal space utilization and does not affect water quality, especially the parameters of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity. There were no significant differences in the growth performance, survival, and health status of lobsters and Snubnose pompano when reared using the MFNC and FNC cultivation systems.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"25 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139161681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, proximate composition, cooking time, and water absorption capacity were also investigated at initial stage. Boiled fish mince was incorporated with wheat flour and spices to prepare eight different samples namely CN (without fish mince, colorless), CC (without fish mince, colored), S1N (25% fish mince, colorless), S1C (25% fish mince, colored) S2N (30% fish mince, colorless), S2C (30% fish mince, colored) and S3N (35% fish mince, colorless) and S3C (35% fish mince, colored). No significant change in the moisture content of colored and non-colored fish noodles was found but moisture, protein, and fat content rose significantly with the increment of added amount of fish mince in the noodles.  A significant decreasing trend was observed in the moisture content of the samples stored in sealed polyethylene packets during the 305 days of storage period whereas the moisture content of all the samples packed in vacuum sealed packets witnessed a non-significant change for the storage of 360 days.  The color, flavor and texture of the products were acceptable up to 305 days in sealed polyethylene packets and 360 days in vacuum sealed packets. Food color had no remarkable effect on proximate composition, cooking time, water absorption capacity, and sensory characteristics of prepared noodles. Colorless noodles containing 35% fish mince was preferred by the panelists. So, both colored and non-colored fish noodles prepared with fish mince (up to 35%) can be stored at room temperature (30-35○C) in both sealed polyethylene packets and vacuum sealed packets for at least 10 months with acceptable moisture content and sensory properties. Vacuum sealed packaging provided the products with better protection against moisture loss throughout the storage period.","PeriodicalId":168203,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139202285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
