These species can rapidly spread from the place of introduction, acting as agents of change, threatening ecosystems, habitats, and indigenous species. Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester, 1880 has invaded freshwater systems all over the world. This article reports the first occurrence of this freshwater jellyfish in a stream on the island of Sardinia, Italy. There is no previous data useful to understand the development of this species in the river systems of the island where streams are usually seasonal, with a strong water reduction, and native animal species are concentrated in a few pools during critical seasons. In our study, we carried out an observation of the phenomenon in order to provide preliminary information about this new population, its characteristics, and environmental features. Endangered and extremely rare endemic species, such as Discoglossus sardus and Euproctus platycephalus, live in Sardinian streams, so this is one more reason to focus on the biological invasion processes of this organism in order to understand its role in this ecosystem’s ecological functioning.","PeriodicalId":165640,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Zoology","volume":"94 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139163232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 27 eggs from three states were used in evaluating internal and external traits quality of the wild eggs which components of their internal and external parameters were measured. Collected data was subjected to One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Among the states, egg quality parameters were significantly different relative to yolk width and albumen index (p≤0.05) while the egg morphometric parameters relative to egg width (p≤0.01) and egg weight (p≤0.05). Results of Pearson’s correlation coefficients showed significant association (p≤0.05) between egg weight and different external and internal egg quality parameters. This study concluded that wild Double-spurred eggs will be best sourced in Ogun state if domestication objective is based on quality of eggs and best source in Oyo State and Osun state if the objective is on Morphometric parameters.","PeriodicalId":165640,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Zoology","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130918983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this experiment, PG was used as inducing agent for both male and female fish. For induced breeding, PG was administered at the rate of 1, 2 and 3 mg/kg body weight to male brood fish, and correspondingly 2, 4 and 6 mg/kg body weight to female brood fish that were considered as the treatments namely, T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Fifty pairs of male and female fish were collected from the Raktadaha beel from where forty-five pairs were selected for induced breeding and the average body weight of the male and female were 43.0±2.5 gm and 55.2±3.0 gm in T1, 45.1±2.9 gm and 56.0±2.8 gm in T2, and 40.3±2.4 gm and 52.6±3.2 gm in T3. The male-female ratio was maintained as 1:1 in the breeding hapa. It was observed that female and male brood fishes ejected eggs and milt, respectively at the contemporary times. Ovulation occurs naturally after 8-10 hours of injection. The fecundity of fish (body weight 45 to 60 gram each) varied from 7,232-27,546. The fertilized eggs were hatched within 16-20 hours. The hatchlings were reared in rearing tank up to 5 days. The fertilization rate of Nandus nandus were 76±4 %, 93±5 % and 57±3 %, in T1, T2, and T3, respectively and the hatching rate were 72±3 %, 86±2 % and 61±4 % in T1,T2 and T3, respectively. Both the fertilization and hatching rates were significantly higher (p<0.05) in T2 treatment than T1 treatment followed by T3 treatment. The mean values of water temperature (°C) were 29.5±1.15, 30.0±2.03 and 30.8±1.76°C, pH was 7.4 ±0.46, 7.8±0.53 and 7.3±0.49 and dissolved oxygen (mg/L) were 5.5±0.61, 5.3±0.24 and 5.8±0.56 in brooder tanks, breeding hapa and larval hapa, respectively during the experiment and did not vary (P>0.05) among them and were suitable for induced spawning of Nandus nandus. Based on the findings of the present experiment, it was revealed that T2 showed the best outcome in terms of fertilization rate (93±5%) and hatching rate (86±2%) among the three treatments under optimum water quality parameters where PG hormone were used at the rate of 2 and 4 mg/kg body weight for male and female fish, respectively. Therefore, the present findings could be used in induced breeding of N. nandus for the development of hatchery propagation. Further trials on rearing or culture of this endangered fish under different stocking densities or feedings might be conducted at on-station and on-farm levels in Bangladesh as well as elsewhere of this region to save the fish from extinction or for its conservation and rehabilitation.","PeriodicalId":165640,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Zoology","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128449925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study's objective was to obtain an adequate level of use of Nutrient Concentrate in the local chicken ration during the growth phase. Research using the experimental method in the laboratory. The experimental design used was a complete randomized design, consisting of 6 treatment rations (R0 = low protein ration (15%), R1 = Ration containing 5% concentrated nutrient, R2 = Ration containing 10% concentrate nutrient R3 = Ration containing 15% nutrient Concentrate R4 = Ration contains 20% concentrate nutrient, and RS = high protein ration (18%) and each is repeated 5 times. The data were analysed by variance, and the differences between treatments were tested by Duncan's multiple range test. The results of the research were: (1) The best growth of local chickens (consumption of ration, weight gain, and ration efficiency) was given by ration containing 10% concentrate nutrient (15% ration protein) and the equivalent of high protein ration (protein ration 18 %), and (2) Nutrient concentrates can be used up to 20% in a local chicken ration of growth phase without affecting chicken health (erythrocytes = 1.87-2.20 × 106, leukocytes = 29.08-37,72 × 103, and haematocrit = 30.80-33.80%).","PeriodicalId":165640,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Zoology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127786117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
