It is assumed that the adaptive receiver and transmitter have no knowledge of the signature waveforms and timing of other users. The receiver and transmitter are trained by a known training sequence prior to data transmission and continuously adjusted by an adaptive algorithm during data transmission. The proposed linear structure is as simple as a standard single-user-detector receiver consisting of a matched filter with constant coefficients except that it requires separate channel for the transmitter adaptation. The concept of an adaptive transmitter maintains advantages with respect to timing recovery, near far effect, narrow-band and frequency selective fading interference suppression and user privacy compared to the systems with conventional matched filter receiver and further improves multiple-access interference elimination compared with the systems employing an adaptive receiver only. Approximations of the probabilities of detection and false alarms and the mean acquisition times of noncoherent matched filter synchronization in continuous tone jamming are introduced when a complementary code pair is used as a spreading code. The idea of using median type filtering as an aid for the matched filter is tested for the noncoherent case. It is shown that continuous jamming can have a very dramatic influence on P/sub d/, P/sub fa/, and T/sub MA/. In a multiuser environment this approach is suboptimal and it does not lead to a near-far resistant (NFR) receiver. A NFR receiver, optimum or suboptimum, utilizes the multivariate statistics provided by the bank of matched filters in order to make a decision for any single user. Several multiuser detection algorithms have been proposed. This paper introduces an adaptive CDMA multiuser detector. The proposed detector combines channel estimation and data detection in a recursive structure driven by learning rules motivated by a self-organizing neural network. Both data-aided and blind learning are possible at a reasonable computational cost. We analyze the performance of the down-link (i.e. the base-to-mobile link) of a low Earth orbiting (LEO) mobile satellite channel. An important characteristic of this fading channel is that the desired signal and the multiple access interference from the same base station fade simultaneously. As a consequence, the performance degradation due to fading will be smaller than for the mobile-to-base links, where fading of the desired signal and the interference are independent. In the limit, one can distinguish between two extreme scenarios. When the thermal noise is dominant relative to multiple access interference, the performance approaches that of a single user in fading channels. At the other extreme, when the energy-per-bit-to-noise power spectral density ratio is very high, the effect of fading on the desired signal becomes negligible, because the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio remains practically constant, in the absence of multiple access interference from other base stations. In practical situations, there may be multiple access interference from other satellites, and the ratio of energy-per-bit-to-thermal noise power spectral density has some finite valuer between the two extreme cases. In the second system the data bits are transmitted in parallel with M orthogonal carriers (no S/P). We assumed a fixed available bandwidth. The performance of the two systems is studied in nonfading and slowly nonselective fading channels. Both systems provide an improved performance. We propose an analytical method of the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the correlation detector in the receiver. Two MMSE receiver architectures are discussed, namely the LFSE (linear fractionally spaced equalizer) and FS-DFE (fractionally spaced decision feedback equalizer). Previous designs of Rake receiver were ineffective at combining the energy from a large number of multipath components, particularly for rapidly changing channels. The new type of receiver described here combines the functions of the searcher needed for initial signal acquisition with those of the Rake processor.
