Stirring speed (100-400 rpm, temperature (40-80°C), acid concentration (0.1-2 M) and dissolution time (30-180 min) were selected as experimental design parameters. 27 experiments were carried out by Box-Behnken experimental design in Minitab 16.0 program. After leaching experiments, the highest Ni dissolution percentages were obtained as 87.85%. The effective parameters and their interactions in nickel dissolution are described with a mathematical model. The results obtained from the experiments were subjected to ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. The R2 value of the model for nickel dissolution was calculated as 0.980. This showed that the predicted values are in good agreement with the observed values. In addition, three-dimensional response surface and contour graphs of the parameters affecting nickel dissolution efficiency were created and the results were examined.","PeriodicalId":15764,"journal":{"name":"Journal of environmental analytical chemistry","volume":"286 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80274867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The possible source of the PAHs in the soil was deduced, using the diagnostic ratio analysis for PAH origin. Risk assessment was based on the incremental life cancer risk of PAHs proposed by Provisional Guidance for Quantitative Risk Assessment of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Effect of phyto-remediation using Zea mays inter-planted with Striga hermonthica (SMV-MS), Zea mays alone (SMV-M), Zea mays inter-planted with Striga hermonthica alongside the application of fertilizer (SMV-MSF) and Zea mays alone alongside fertilizer application (SMV-MF). The result reveals that the PAHs composition based on ring prevalence in agricultural soils around Mechanic village Wukari was in the order Σ5 >Σ6 >Σ4 >Σ3 >Σ2 ring. Dibenz [a,h] anthracene 4.52 μg/kg (39.09%) has the highest percentage abundance but was less than the 100 μg/kg and 700 μg/kg Canadian soil quality guideline for agricultural and commercial layout while acenaphthene 0.111 μg/kg (0.90%) was the least abundant. The source of the PAHs in the soil was basically pyrogenic based on the diagnostic ratio analysis while phytoremediation of the soil using Zea mays inter-planted with Striga hermonthica significantly reduce the PAHs content of the soil.","PeriodicalId":15764,"journal":{"name":"Journal of environmental analytical chemistry","volume":"56 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86874949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The polychlorinated biphenyls in the soil was extracted with 40ml hexane-acetone mixture (1:1) in ultrasonic bath for 30 minutes and cleaned with column chromatography packed with silica gel. The polychlorinated biphenyls were quantified using Agilent 6975 Gas chromatography Mass Spectrophotometer with the following results: PCB 18 (0.71), PCB 20 (0.37), PCB 28 (0.38), PCB 29 (0.38), PCB 44 (0.42), PCB 52 (0.66), PCB 101 (0.61), PCB 105 (0.17), PCB 137 (0.64), PCB 142 (0.33), PCB 153 (0.42), PCB 170 (0.13) and PCB 180 (0.21) all in mg/kg. Remediation with Moringa seed results in the followings; PCB 20 (0.28), PCB 28 (0.28), PCB 29 (0.28), PCB 52 (0.30), PCB 101 (0.18), PCB 143 (0.91) while the other congeners were completely removed. The Moringa seed powder results completely removed the PCBs sake PCB 44. The effectiveness of the powder as compared with the seed in the removal of the PCBs might be attributed to the increased surface area of the seed powder providing for better interaction with the contaminated soil. Whereas the results from the use of activated carbon only removed PCB 105 completely and reduced the concentrations of other congeners as follows: PCB 18 (0.04), PCB 20 (0.011), PCB 28 (0.019), PCB 29 (0.019), PCB 44 (0.021), PCB 52 (0.33), PCB 101 (0.031), PCB137 (0.032), PCB 142 (0.017), PCB 153 (0.021), PCB 170 (0.007) and PCB 180 (0.011) all in mg/kg. The result suggests that Moringa seed powder could possibly serve as an excellent means of remediation for Polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated soil.","PeriodicalId":15764,"journal":{"name":"Journal of environmental analytical chemistry","volume":"77 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88231980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since “ oil odor prob-lem ” was happened in disaster area, the source estimation of oil odor was conducted using sensory evaluation and Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry (GC-O). By the sensory evaluation, the odor in disaster area was assigned as “ odor of oil and sewage ” . To know in detail of the oil odor, environmental samples (oil absorption sheets) were collected and sensory compared with several fuel oils. As the result of evaluation, oil odor in 7 days after accident consisted of diesel oil (with / or kerosene) instead of spilled oil from steel mill. This result suggested that those fuel oils were also spilled from various sources (heating fuel for house and agriculture) around this disaster are during this flood. On the other hand, the oil absorption sheets in 12 days after accident did not showed odor of those fuel oils, and it showed weak odor of spilled oil from steel mill. It could be due to that these fuel oils spilled were evaporated within a few days under the summer weather, but spilled oil from steel mill which had heavier property was kept in environment.","PeriodicalId":15764,"journal":{"name":"Journal of environmental analytical chemistry","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74627271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
