The analysis, based on the elevated cross form maze experiment, had as main objective to verify the stress level in adult and young rats that suffered the influence of non-ionizing radiation (Experimental Group) and to compare the answer ratio (number of entrances in the open arms/total number of entrances in the arms) with the Control Group, exempt of the influence of the radiation. Throughout the tests, a microwave generator was used operating in the frequency of 2.45 GHz during a daily period of one hour. The results obtained with the experiment showed that, for the older rats, no significant variation in the anxiety and stress levels was observed between the Experimental and Control Groups. On the other hand, for the younger rats there was a considerable increase of those levels in the Experimental Group in relation to the Control Group.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. The method is based on Wheeler's principle of measuring the antenna impedance within two controlled environments: free space and a closed metallic box. An extended equivalent circuit is introduced, that gives an exact description of the behavior of the small device within the metallic box. This model is the basis for the determination of the radiation efficiency, independent of the size of the box and the location of the device within the box. In the next part of the paper, a concept for an integrated up-to-date multiband antenna for a GSM mobile phone is presented. The characterization of the radiation efficiency by the above mentioned method proves the new way to characterize the efficiency.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. Indeed, one of the most simple ways to eliminate the periodic fading due to chromatic dispersion is to use an optical single side band signal. In accordance with this principle, this paper presents two highly linear multistage MMIC amplifiers. For the design of the matching networks, the real-frequency technique has been successfully applied to 26.5-29.5 GHz and 40.5-42.5 GHz amplifiers.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. To obtain a compact and robust design, active downconverters are monolithically integrated using a standard 0.6 /spl mu/m-MESFET process and combined with planar linearly polarized aperture-coupled patch antennas. A very low noise figure of 3.5 dB and a total conversion gain of 30 dB is achieved. The use of dedicated monolithically integrated components leads to very low gain and phase variations. This active array will be used in a multi dimensional channel sounder.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. A homogeneous lossy dielectric cylinder of unknown permittivity scatters the incident wave in free space and the scattered fields are recorded. Based on the boundary condition and the incident field, a set of nonlinear surface integral equations is derived. The imaging problem is reformulated into an optimization problem and the genetic algorithm is employed to reconstruct the shape and the dielectric constant of the object. Numerical results show that the permittivity of the cylinders can be successfully reconstructed even when the permittivity is fairly large. The effect of random noise on imaging reconstruction is also investigated.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. After many eye-diagram simulations at 2.5 Gbit/s and 10 Gbit/s repetition rates, it has been concluded that the use of the transmission line transformer to match the impedance of the laser yields a high improvement in the system performance of the system. The cut-off frequency of the TLT was varied and it can be observed that there is an optimum value which maximizes the bit error rate (BER) of the system.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003.
