Among PONs, Ethernet-PON (EPON) networks stand out, as they have the advantage of combining simplicity and low cost devices with a wide bandwidth provision. As a matter of fact, the Epon Optical Light Expander (OLE) has been designed to improve the scalability and cost issues of EPON networks, adding, in this way, CWDM bandwidth enhancements without extra costs per subscriber. In this article, we empower the OLE with a new Adaptive Prediction Algorithm (APA) that allows for better performances in terms of per-user bandwidth assignment efficiency. Our algorithm shows an average packet delay that is 18% less than the standard Interleaved Polling Adaptive Control Protocol (IPACT) algorithm, simulated for medium traffic load conditions.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134218590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NAN brings new business opportunities by opening this market to new stakeholders. Although the NAN model is accepted, there are some technical issues that need to be resolved to facilitate wider NAN deployment. This paper proposes a new technical approach to neutral access networks, which is based on Carrier Ethernet technology. The proposal allows the user to independently select both the service provider and the network operator that will be used to deliver the service. To achieve this, a shared infrastructure is needed, which takes NAN as reference model. The main contributions of this proposal are the following: an Ethernet-based approach for neutral access networks; a mechanism for users to select which network operator is used to access each/target service provider; and an AAA (Authentication, Authorization and Accounting) infrastructure and access control policy profile to control service delivery over selected/requested NAN. Finally, a working prototype is described for validation of the proposal.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126515488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Web applications currently rely on monolithic storage structures which place the sole responsibility of data storage, protection and maintenance on the web application provider. This research introduces the concept of a de-centralised approach for information storage online. Distributed storage techniques are used to address concerns with the classic monolithic approach while also addressing issues such as data ownership concerns for personal information. The research results in the presentation on an API that allows distributed storage of information with seamless integration of data into the traditional Web 2.0 model.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121768230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we conduct a practical study on the performance of FTP file transfers over real WLAN equipment. To this end, we propose a new analytic model that translates the highly complex dynamics of the FTP/TCP/IP/MAC-stack, and their interactions, into a single parameter, which will be called the effective load. The effective load is used to describe the flow-level behavior of FTP-based file transfers over WLANs without admission control as a Processor-Sharing (PS)-model. Next, despite the fact that PS models are heavily used in modeling flow-level performance in WLAN networks, an extensive validation of such models with real equipment has not been conducted. Motivated by this, we validate in the present paper our analytic model by comparing the model-based response times against the outcomes obtained from a testbed environment. The results show (a) that the obtained mean download times are fairly insensitive to the file-size distribution, as suggested by the PS-model, and (b) that the model leads to accurate predictions over a broad range of parameters combinations, including different file-size distributions and light- and heavy-load scenarios.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129668640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uncompressed video transmissions are especially interesting in this context as they are not subjected to jitter and delays caused by compression mechanisms and can therefore be expected to be more robust when it comes to added delay variations and subsequent distortions stemming from security devices. The paper focuses on the special case where video is protected by Forward Error Correction mechanisms, which allow reordering of the original packet sequence after it may have been altered by network impairments. Various Forward Error Correction mechanisms are applied in the presence of a network intrusion detection system and its impact on the resulting video quality is investigated.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130925018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to reduce the investment cost many companies decide to offer the streaming by the use of the application-layer multicasting constructed on the top of an overlay network. In this paper we address the problem of overlay networks design. The main goal is to minimize the cost of access links selected for nodes participating in the application-layer multicasting. The second objective is to minimize the network delay, which is mainly caused in the Internet by inter-ISP (Internet Service Providers) transmissions. Therefore, in the optimization model the underlying network is composed of ISPs. The idea is to provide enough upload capacity within each ISP in order to reduce the number of links between ISPs. The optimization problem is formulated as an Integer Program. We use optimal methods (branch-and-cut algorithm included in CPLEX) as well as our own heuristic that yields results very close to optimum. Moreover, we use simulations to examine the tradeoff of the delay-aware approach in terms of the cost and the number of inter-ISP links.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126572305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes optical burst signal receivers that are based on the transfer function of order n, Gn(s)=1???Hn(s), where Hn(s) denotes a Bessel filter transfer function of order n. We present a design method for the proposed receivers and show their performances. We confirm that the proposed optical burst receiver has better performance than the previous AC-coupling one, and that raising the order of the transfer function improves receiver performance.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131846430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proposed architecture consists of a femtocell connected through wired home infrastructure to a set of nodes, called home access nodes (HAN's). The HAN is used to limit the wireless emissions to levels below 1mW; adapt the radio signal to the wired media, and perform initial identification of the target radio signal. This architecture demonstrates the concept of very-low-radiation distributed antenna system (VLR-DAS) for distribution of various radio-protocols including 3G, LTE, IMT-Advanced and WiMax as radio-over-X (optical fiber, Coax, power-line, Cat-5, etc.).","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128030721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we attempt to predict the popularity of a Web object given its historical access records using a novel neural network technique, reservoir computing (RC). The traces of popular videos at YouTube for five continuous months are taken as a case study. We compare RC with existing analytical models. Experimental results show that RC, given a 10-day trace composed of daily cumulative views for a video, is able to predict the next-day’s popularity with less than 5% relative square errors (RSEs). It is also demonstrated that RC achieves the best prediction performance among all compared models in longer-term prediction. The advantages and limitations of using RC in popularity prediction are discussed.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129537080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is one of the main advantages when it is used for video transmission. IPTV service is currently one of the hot topics where industry and academia is providing their efforts and obtaining significant results. The next big step is to serve stereoscopic (3D) video and 3D-TV over IP networks. In this paper, first, we will carry out an overview of the coding systems used in 3D IPTV at this time. Then, we will evaluate the transmission of 3D video over IP. We will take measurements of the bandwidth, delay and jitter in order to evaluate the QoS and QoE of the IPTV service. This study will show the performance of 3D video over an IPTV network and will demonstrate that, in spite of the bandwidth consumed, 3D video can be provided in these networks.","PeriodicalId":155572,"journal":{"name":"2010 2nd International Conference on Evolving Internet","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115849308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
