These inequalities severely confront municipalities' efforts to eradicate poverty and enhance sustainable development. The article attempts to answer the question : can these developmental local governments successfully redress their two economies as linked to equity, sustainable development and good governance? The traditional notion that policies and government structures are adequate guarantors of a quality of life, good governance and sustainable development is questioned. The interrelatedness between good governance, ubuntu and poverty alleviation is therefore explored.

It was motivated by the observation that indigenous food crops, including vegetables, seem to be suffering from low acceptability status in contemporary society in rural northern KwaZulu-Natal. The study was an attempt to contribute towards alleviation of the problem through increasing yields of the indigenous crops without extraordinary efforts. It used a participatory approach between researchers and rural women. A field investigation was carried out to study the impact of organic manure in agricultural systems yielding cassava, maize, beans and amaranthus (morogo). Manure application substantially increased crop yield. There was a significant reduction in seed yield of both maize and bean plants that were inter-cropped with cassava. Cassava intercropped with beans recorded a higher tuber yield than that of isolated cassava monocultures during the year 2002. There was a significant reduction in tuber yield of cassava due to intercropping with maize. These results suggest that indigenous vegetables should be cultivated on a large scale in order to solve the problem of the low acceptability status of indigenous foods.. This\u0000resurgence in investigating and celebrating African resources of meaning invites diversified\u0000expertise and this article contributes to this movement through an examination of the\u0000important dimension of psychotherapy. The paper explores the contribution of African\u0000traditional and religious faith healing practices in the provision of psychological wellbeing.\u0000The authors identify a strong relationship between African traditional and religious faith\u0000healing. Related practices among the amaXhosa people of the Eastern Cape, South Africa are used to exemplify both healing effects and psychological wellbeing outcomes. The religious component is addressed using Christian based methods of attending to psychological wellbeing. We argue that although generally viewed with suspicion, misrepresented, and even rejected in some circles, traditional and religious faith healing ceremonies enhance the release of misdirected energies and, as such, should be considered as a proper part of mainstream forms of therapeutic intervention. A strong call is thus made to regard the African traditional and religious faith healing methods as complementary to the current taken-as-mainstream provisions for people's wellbeing. By using Bourdieu's (1991) theory of social practice, I argue that people had always used their languages as important symbolic resources and for the creation of the structured social dispositions. History shows that languages were considered as ethnocentric and the proliferation of groups in a limited space created collusions and conflicts. In South Africa this situation is now being managed through a multilingual language legislation that came as a result of the new democracy in the country. The findings revealed an urgent\u0000need for intellectual property rights, drafting the legislation and implementing the laws\u0000among others. The challenge is to keep the question of whether the intellectual property\u0000rights appropriately apply in the African context. In some countries the practitioners' rights\u0000are recognized and legislation to protect them has been drafted such as in South Africa.\u0000Indigenous knowledge as a body of knowledge and some of the practices are characterized\u0000as mysterious. There appears to be misconceptions about the body of knowledge as\u0000compared to modern medicine. The protection of IKS, given its complex nature, required a\u0000long consultative process. Among others, the study aimed at identifying\u0000the nature and types of IK being used by the rural women, the extent of use as well as the\u0000domains of use. It equally aimed at finding out how the rural women's use of IK has\u0000positively affected sustainable development in Ogun State. The survey research design\u0000was adopted. The targeted population comprised rural women in Odeda local government\u0000area of Ogun State. A purposive sample of 250 respondents was selected. Data was\u0000collected with an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and analyses were\u0000carried out using frequencies and percentage distributions. Findings revealed that the\u0000majority of the rural women were farmers and illiterates but have vast knowledge of\u0000traditional medicine. Policy development that forms part of the government' outputs are influenced by many factors which includes historical facts, political ideologies, cultural differences and sometimes leadership. This article deals with some of these determinants. These give us a better picture as we attempt to outline the existing conflict between the African National Congress (herein referred to as ANC) and the ongoing\u0000political battle with the indigenous traditional system of governance in the form of traditional\u0000leadership. As a point of departure the author briefly outlines the position of the\u0000Constitution regarding traditional leaders in the democratic dispensation of South Africa. I\u0000conclude that the ANC's position is ambivalent. It is this ambiguity that contributes to an\u0000unclear policy formulation when it comes to defining the role and status of traditional\u0000leaders within the local government structures. The article also discusses what the ANC\u0000regards as the weaknesses of the traditional leadership and thus arrives at the conclusion\u0000that the institution of traditional leadership is by nature an undemocratic entity that must\u0000be abolished. The alleged undemocratic practices also include the exclusion of women as\u0000traditional leaders. The author argues that the institution of traditional leadership can and\u0000must be democratised and therefore be sustained for the benefit of development in rural\u0000areas. Rituals such as the sitting shiva in the Jewish religion would help mourning. The funeral service industry has since assumed tremendous control over death rituals. Although largely commercialized in contemporary societies, the practice of\u0000rituals among African Indigenous Churches (AICs) in South Africa remains relatively intact.\u0000Bereavement is a shared experience among members of the Zion Apostolic Church (mapostola). Ma-postola understands grief as a multi-layered phenomenon which affects the\u0000surviving family emotionally, physically, cognitively and behaviourally. Their intervention\u0000model is an informed process which is aligned to the chronological order of phases of\u0000grief. It takes survivors through the initial stage of shock and disbelief, allows them a\u0000period of healing, and ultimately helps them complete the work of mourning. It requires\u0000collective participation, social isolation of the bereaved and then culminates in reincorporation of the bereaved into the community.
