Here, we studied the phenolic content and the antioxidant capacity of selected genotypes within a breeding program. The results suggest that this program may be unintentionally selecting raspberry phenolics. If so, this would be of particular interest, since there is scientific evidence that raspberry phenolics or their metabolites may have beneficial health effects, namely antioxidant activity.","PeriodicalId":147460,"journal":{"name":"Medical Sciences Forum","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130233581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The phytochemicals from cocoa shell were extracted using water and characterized by UPLC-MS/MS analysis. HepG2 cells were cotreated with either the aqueous extract from cocoa shell (CAE, 20–100 µg mL−1) or 10–50 µmol L−1 of pure theobromine, protocatechuic acid, procyanidin B2, epicatechin, and catechin in the presence or absence of palmitic acid (PA, 500 µmol L−1) to mimic NAFLD conditions in vitro. Biomarkers of mitochondrial function and oxidative stress were evaluated 24 h after the cotreatment in cell supernatants and lysates using chemical, biochemical, and immunochemical techniques. CAE and the phytochemicals therein significantly (p < 0.05) protected mitochondrial content (15–100%) and preserved mitochondrial function, promoting O2 consumption (1.2- to 1.8-fold) and ATP production (1.3- to 2.1-fold). Phytochemicals from cocoa shell significantly (p < 0.05) decreased PA-triggered oxidative stress. The mitochondrial membrane potential was maintained (62–100%), and the production of mitochondrial superoxide (26–100%) and total ROS (17–100%) was abrogated. CAE significantly (p < 0.05) modulated cell signaling pathways associated with ROS production and mitochondrial dysfunction, including an increase in the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 (2.8-fold), protein kinase B (AKT) (2.8-fold), GSK3 (2.3-fold), Raf-1 (1.9-fold), and mTOR (1.7-fold). In conclusion, results suggested that the cocoa shell’s phytochemicals could protect mitochondrial liver function and alleviate oxidative stress by modulating key pathways involved in their regulation.","PeriodicalId":147460,"journal":{"name":"Medical Sciences Forum","volume":"194 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121848971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the last year, 99 athletes were evaluated in terms of their oral health through extraoral, intraoral and radiographic exams. In this population a high prevalence of dry mouth, erosive wear, gingivitis, periodontitis and DMF index was observed, which may have a profound and negative impact on sports performance. Of the athletes, 40.4% attended follow up consultations, where restoration and scaling were the majority of the clinical procedures performed. This data highlights the importance of a dedicated sports dentistry consultations.","PeriodicalId":147460,"journal":{"name":"Medical Sciences Forum","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122440905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to review and meta-analyse the incidence of main oral complications in paediatric oncology during chemotherapy. The search results were obtained from B-on, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library and PubMed databases. Of 1032 articles potentially relevant, 13 were included in this review. The overall incidence of caries, gingivitis, ulcers, mucositis, and candidiasis was 67.8%, 55.6%, 44.2%, 41.6%, and, 29.5%, respectively. During chemotherapy, paediatric patients with cancer present higher incidence of caries and gingivitis. Incidence rate meta-analysis show high heterogeneity. More studies should be done to reduce uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":147460,"journal":{"name":"Medical Sciences Forum","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128039290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Somatic or somatosensory tinnitus can be attributed to the somatic system of the temporomandibular or cervical spine. Due to the multifactorial etiology of TMD, its management should be based on a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists and physical therapists may play a role in the individual and multimodal management of such patients. The aim of this case study is to analyse the effects of the conservative multidisciplinary management of tinnitus in patients with coexisting tinnitus, TMD and bruxism.","PeriodicalId":147460,"journal":{"name":"Medical Sciences Forum","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114446699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The identification of AS aggregates in gut biopsy specimens from people with PD may provide an opportunity to identify PD at a very early stage, prior to symptom onset. Changes in gut microbiota and inflammatory conditions (such as periodontitis) may be linked with PD onset/evolution.
