The study area is Pangyo Techno Valley of the high tech industrial complex in Sungnam, Gyeonggi, where traffic safety signs are investigated, and the traffic accidents severity of the concerned roadway segment is analyzed by road type. The analysis found that when the urban roads are grouped as intersections and roadway, such variables as accident type and violation of the law have impacts on the traffic accidents severity. This implies that the accident reduction requires the traffic safety signs closely related with traffic accidents severity. The paper suggests the systematic and sustainable development of the database of traffic safety signs in order to continuously analyze the impact of the traffic safety signs on the accidents reduction.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"291 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134635969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People feel uneasy about driving by high-risk drivers, so it is argued that they should be institutionally restricted from driving. However, it is difficult to determine suitabilities of driving by inspecting factors that affect the actual driving abilities. For elderly drivers, restricting their driver licenses can be factors infringing on mobility rights. For this reason, a prudent approach is needed to improve the driver aptitude test system. In order to solve this problem, if the driver license is determined by assessing physical and cognitive abilities which are identified to affect driving, it will be a better system which all ages agree. In this study, human factors that can influence driving were analyzed by comparing between cognitive abilities and driving behaviors using a driving simulator. Cognitive abilities of 65 subjects were measured using special apparatus. The results of measured cognitive abilities were used to categorize into two groups which were with good abilities and with poor abilities. Next, driving behaviors of the subjects in various road environments were analyzed through collected log data using a driving simulator. First, it was confirmed that the subjects with relatively higher age belonged to the group with poor cognitive abilities. Second, the group with good cognitive abilities showed better driving behavior than the worse group. Third, it was analyzed that there were more differences in urban roads between two groups. Fourth, it is confirmed that there were more differences in driving behavior among the groups at nighttime than at daytime. The results of this study are meaningful because this was carried out empirical studies to find the factors affecting driving behaviors. This research can be used to carry out future research on the driver license and driving behaviors.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133017351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to prevent drowsy driving due to long-time driving of trucks, the corresponding Act was revised in 2016 to ensure that truck drivers should take at least 30 minutes of rest after four hours of continuous driving. In addition, the Korea Expressway Corporation, an expressway operator, is trying to provide sufficient rest areas for truck drivers. For here, it is important to construct them in appropriate locations on the truck route to avoid a waste of budget. Therefore, this study analyzed Toll Collection System (TCS) Origin/Destination (O/D) data and selected the most overlapping traffic links from ranking 1st to 4th for both directions, and showed the most appropriate locations using ArcView. As a result, the service areas with truck parking spots are located within the range of both directions, but there is only one sleeping shelter in the range. In addition, the traffic volume in the direction to Mokpo (South bound) shows twice more than that to Seoul (North bound). Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize the service areas’ location within the selected range first and south bound direction requires more facilities. For the future research, the authors recommend to study about adequacy size of service area with the analysis of truck driver’s behaviors. It is expected to contribute making a decision for investment priority of the budget.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133734541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This zone-based analysis has fundamental limitations due to the spatial aggregation. It cannot analyze the various effects according to the traveler’s individual attributes on the mode choice behavior, which is inevitable limitation of the zone-based analysis in aspect of forecasting accuracy. However, the zone-based analysis is unavoidable for analyzing large-scale areas such as the national-wide area or metropolitan area. Therefore, this study aims to build a transportation mode choice model with improved accuracy of the model than the currently used model within limitations of the zone-based analysis. In particular, the study tried to reflect travel time and service frequencies of various transit modes between an OD pair into the traveler’s behavior model in a more realistic way. The suggested model can explain the phenomenon that the travel time differently affects the traveler’s mode choice behavior by the travel distance. This study also was performed to verify logically that the proposed model explains more realistically the choice behavior by testing the value of time and elasticity. A case analysis was included to show how the analysis results may vary depending on the mode choice model to be applied.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131650207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, it is known that human factors leading to the crash occurrence include drowsiness, aggressiveness, and inattention etc. This study mainly focused on underlying factors resulting in such human factors that have been widely addressed to date in the area of traffic safety. Crash investigation systems focus on the road geometry, road environment factor and the driver’s risk driving behavior, human factor. However, less efforts have been made in collecting data related to internal factors of crashes that affect driving behavior. For example, the internal factors include taxi driver’s health characteristics, living conditions and taxi company’s working environment. The purpose of this study is to derive the factors of taxi company’s safety level and to propose a new direction for taxi safety consulting. In-depth interviews with commercial taxi drivers and managers of taxi companies were conducted to collect survey data to represent internal factors associated with driver’s working and welfare environments. In addition to a multiple linear regression, a binomial logistic regression and a random forest analysis technique were adopted to derive underlying internal factors to be used to identify the level of traffic safety taxi companies. The results show that the identified contributing factors include weekly working hours, accident-involved vehicle management, privately-used hour, narrow space inside the vehicle, fatigue management, and the level of life satisfaction. The countermeasures for enhancing taxi safety were discussed in terms of improving working environment and welfare of taxi drivers.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114795282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently Korean government planned to launch the MaaS which integrates existing and innovative mobility services by providing booking and payment through a single application, thus provides convenient, seamless travel experience to domestic people. Although many researchers anticipate MaaS will bring a shift from car-centric to transit-centric mobility pattern, it is also possible that MaaS increase ridership of fossil-fuel vehicle. Understanding the impact of MaaS on people’s choice behavior beforehand is critical to successfully implement MaaS and to minimize social disorder. Thus, the objective of our research is to investigate user preference to transport alternatives available in the MaaS system. We conducted a stated choice experiment with five alternatives including mode combinations and obtained 1,556 valid samples. We developed two separate nested logit models which can assuage independence of irrelevant alternatives problems. Each model showed satisfying results in that the values of robust r-square were 0.297, 0.310, respectively. Finally, we revealed how socio-economic variables, workplace variables affect the preference of each nested structure. The results of this paper will be helpful to platform operators when building marketing strategies and designing a customized travel mode recommendation system.","PeriodicalId":146954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121059524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
