These machines have a geometric structure allowing for an accurate analytical solution for the magnetic fields, which is desirable especially for optimization purposes. This paper derives a compact but exact analytical formula for the load torque computation in slotless SPM machines. The formula has the advantage of well highlighting the dependence of the load torque from machine construction details. It can be therefore useful in the design and dimensioning stage as a fast alternative to time-consuming Finite Element (FE) analysis.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131441976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to highlight not only the advantages of such machines but also some drawbacks of theirs, such as the low power factor and the torque ripple. The strategies to reduce such a drawbacks are also reported. Machines adopting Ferrite magnets instead of rare-earth permanent magnet are considered. It is shown that the reduction of the performance is quite limited thanks to the anisotropic structure, compensating the use of low energy PMs by means of the reluctance torque component. At last, fractional-slot winding concepts are summarized, highlighting some tricks to overcome the high torque ripple in such a machines.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131912651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They both cause a mechanical impulse at a frequency that is related to the speed of the rotor. For neither is it possible to develop a state-space model relating the fault and its location and severity to the measured outputs. The measurements therefore require extensive processing to extract features that are related to a fault and to categorize it. Measurements physically close to the fault location (e.g. vibrations) are generally more useful to accurately determine this fault than measurements away from it (e.g. currents and voltage at the drive). Models of faults include fatigue (e.g. Paris model) and degradation due to bearing currents. In the recent past the techniques to identify these faults have been refined, tested extensively, and compared. They typically include signal conditioning, feature extraction (in the time and time-frequency domain) and categorization, which includes fault identification. Failure prognosis and use of multiple sensors are possible future directions of research to produce reliable estimated of condition and facilitate health management.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134083047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the multilevel (predominantly three-level) voltage source inverters (VSIs) and matrix ac-ac converters have become industrially accepted technologies in three-phase systems. In recent times, attempts have commenced to integrate multilevel VSIs and matrix converters with the multiphase drive technology. This paper provides a review of recent advances in this area. A general configuration of an n-phase to m-phase matrix converter is considered and the differences with regard to the control of standard three-phase to three-phase matrix converters are underlined. Next, two different topologies of the multiphase multilevel supply are discussed and the emphasis is placed on appropriate pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques that can be used in conjunction with the given converter structure. The first topology utilises multilevel (three-level) VSI and the machine's stator multiphase winding is star-connected. In the second topology the winding is open-ended and each side of the winding is connected to a two-level VSI. Carrier-based and space vector based PWM strategies are considered and the performance is illustrated using experimental results.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121476290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using d-q model of induction motor this asymmetry is reflected as pseudo-saliency through different resistances and inductances in both axes. An extensive study has been performed to simulate various cases of faulty cage, which cannot be achieved by measurements on actual industrial drives. Simulation results can be efficiently used for analysis of closed-loop induction motor drives, in which determination of rotor faults, due to the intrinsic speed correction performed by the controller, is much harder to achieve.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121841371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analytical models provide fast thermal simulations in comparison with finite element methods (FEM) and computed fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Motor-CAD is a useful and easy configurable tool to simulate motor models, but the quantity of construction parameters makes difficult the calibration process of a model. This paper provides a thermal test process to test machines to calibrate analytical models. And the procedure to estimate temperatures and calculate their uncertainties is exposed. Also a calibration method is proposed to identify critical parameters on analytical models that determine thermal behaviour of the machine. Specific thermal test are designed in order to calibrate these critical parameters like the base in the test bench. Finally the calibration process is validated with 3 different but similar machines. The same analytic model with only construction differences satisfies experimental thermal tests of 3 machines.","PeriodicalId":133392,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Workshop on Electrical Machines Design, Control and Diagnosis (WEMDCD)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126692288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
