Orientations of the thin sections were chosen to give views down and perpendicular to the major fiber axis. The crystalline fiber phase is high albite microtwinned on the (010) composition plane, elongated in the major growth direction, [001]. Fiber morphology is non-polygonal with an average fiber diameter of 2000 A perpendicular to c*. Fibers are separated by a non-crystalline residuum layer of approximately constant thickness (300–500 A). Microtwinning relationships, \u0000as well as selected area diffraction (SAD) patterns, reveal both crystallographic and non-crystallographic branching with the former unexpectedly dominant.

Investigations of residual stresses in such bi-layer tubes are important for developing optimal welding techniques. The neutron and X-ray diffraction methods were used to analyze the stress behavior around the welded region on the tube. To this end, strain components in the radial, axial and tangential directions were measured across the weld. The results are compared to the data obtained by the destructive turning out technique and theoretical predictions by the finite element method.

The discussion is based on results performed on wires \u0000and microwire materials with general composition FeSiB(CuNb) and obtained by different \u0000rapid solidification techniques. The evolution of magnetic properties (i.e., coercivity, \u0000magnetostriction) is correlated with the structural evolution associated to the corresponding \u0000heating parameters, experimentally determined by X-ray diffraction or differential \u0000scanning calorimetry. Finally, a discussion is introduced on the important role \u0000played by the structural nature of a two-phase system into the above-mentioned magnetic \u0000properties. Mechanisms ranging from dislocation slip, recrystallization, anisometric grain rotation and grain growth all can contribute to the development of textures with similar characteristics. This paper documents neutron texture measurements of axisymmetric textures in hot-pressed, hot-forged and tape-cast alumina. Strong basal textures were introduced in the tape-cast samples during long term annealing in finer, non-tabular aluminas if glass and dopant additions are introduced. The implications of these results versus prior reports of textures in alumina and alumina matrix composites are discussed.
