Data from many Indo-European languages demonstrate that word-onset phonemes are first selected in production planning, whereas whole syllables and CV morae are selected in native Chinese and Japanese, respectively. To empirically test the languagespecific view of proximate units, we investigate the roles of syllables and onset phonemes as proximate units in Korean, using a picture-naming task (Li et al. 2015). This is based on the fact that both syllables and phonemes are salient units in Korean phonological and orthographic structures. A significant priming effect was found for syllables, and a marginally significant effect for onset segments. These results indicate that in Korean, syllables function as proximate units in spoken-word production planning, but onset phonemes also show facilitation effects, albeit less robust ones than syllables. Our findings suggest that the functional phonological unit in spoken-word production is language dependent.","PeriodicalId":127887,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Phonetics, Phonology, and Morphology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121676892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, Hong (2015) showed through pattern recognition modeling that Korean listeners used static spectral properties and duration when identifying English vowels. The present study extended Hong (2015) and built a logistic regression classification model to investigate which acoustic cues (static or dynamic spectral features, duration or F0) four different identification-proficiency levels of 133 Korean listeners may use to identify American English monophthongs in /hVd/ syllables. It turned out that the two upper-level groups of Korean listeners used dynamic spectral properties and duration just like American English listeners, whereas the other two lower-level groups used static spectral properties and duration.","PeriodicalId":127887,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Phonetics, Phonology, and Morphology","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128821539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monophthongization occurs in 93.04% of a total of 2,370 tokens and in higher than 99% of the cases with onsets and also of non-initial position in a word. However, only 31.82% of word initial tokens are monophthongized, which supports the findings that Seoul Korean still retains /ɨi/ as a diphthong, though only in some restricted contexts. 94.40% of monophthongized /ɨi/ tokens are realized as [i] except for the cases of genitive case marking which mostly show [e]. In word initial position, though, 61.74% of the monophthongized diphthong tokens are realized as [ɨ] and in the other cases as [i]. This result assumes that the phonological characteristics of /ɨi/ are totally different in terms of its position (word initial or non-initial) or its grammatical role as a genitive case marker.","PeriodicalId":127887,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Phonetics, Phonology, and Morphology","volume":"273 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121271558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
