T. gondii is an intracellular parasite (transmitted to human population) that causes various congenital diseases; including chorioretinitis, microcephaly, hydrocephaly, encephalomyelitis, mental retardation and hepatosplenomegaly, among others. The parasite affects also immunocompromissed patients that suffer from any type of cancer, organ transplantation and HIV. A deeper study on toxoplasmosis requires analysis of the developmental stages of the parasite, including the cyst stage, which allows it to evade the immune system and to get established in the host organism permanently. The goal of this work was to develop a digital image processing algorithm based on texture recognition to allow automatic detection of the cysts associated to pathogen T. gondii from isolated Colombian native strains in meat samples for human consumption, using computational software Matlab 2013, specifically through the Image Processing Toolbox. This algorithm allowed to segment the biological images, highlighting typical features of the cysts for calculate its eccentricity as a circularity criterion and finally to validate the efficiency of the algorithm.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132340281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we analyzed the implementation of an Android-based application for the measurement of height in children between 2 and 7 years old. The objective of this manuscript is to evaluate the growth curves of children, and supply an automated diagnostics tool to the health professional to compare growth curves with standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). To obtain the height of children in a mobile device, we used the triangulation method in which the measurements are obtained through the accelerometer and the gyroscope embedded in the mobile device (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3). As control experiment, we measured the height of 17 children using the manual method of the book and measuring tape. Then, we measure the same subjects with our mobile application. The results showed that height measurements using our mobile device varied slightly among them (coefficient of variance = 0.13) when compared to measurements obtained with the manual method (coefficient of variance = 0.41). Additionally, with the use of our Android-based application we reduced the time to measure the height of a child from 12.5 s to 3.20 s, which allows the health professional to make periodic measures of a large number of children and, most importantly, accurately detect any anomalies in their growth rates.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130175721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control law is based on prediction model and is derived starting from the prediction of the output: a truncated Taylor series expansion of order two. A simple speed observer is employed to estimate positions derivatives. The design of the predictive control system requires the derivation of the dynamic nonlinear model of the translational manipulator and the determination of the corresponding control law. Intensive simulation studies were performed to verify that the outputs of the designed control system, car and arm positions, follow arbitrary step wise reference trajectories satisfying the design specifications previously established.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114744876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of a crawl and gait stimulator, which can be used with infants from 6 months to 2 years old, is important as it might significantly improve the development of their motor skills. The objective of our crawl and gait stimulator was to encourage the development of motor skills in infants using visual incentives in an interactive manner. Here we introduce the design and construction of a crawl and gait stimulator that was tested with infants with gross motor skill disabilities (i.e. Down syndrome or cerebral palsy). This stimulator consists of an electromechanical system and a software controller. The electro-mechanical system is made of a compliant pad with several compression modules connected in sequence. We designed four independent compression sequences termed as path sequences. Each path sequence consisted of compression modules, and each module consisted of a 30 Newtons compression sensor developed in-house connected to eight LEDs. When one path sequence is activated, the infant crawled following it while turning the lights off as the infant compressed the sensors until the infant reached the end of the sequence. We found that the infants with motor system pathologies completed the path sequence in a significantly shorter time when the stimulator was activated. The stimulator completion time was compared to the time to complete the same path using traditional stimulation regimes. Our system proved to be an effective stimulation device to improve the skills of infants with motor skill pathologies in a fun, safe, and efficient manner.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122899487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is extremely important to select the Integral Protection System Lightning SIPRA increases the chances of ensuring effective protection against lightning. Not only because it is in between the security of being human, also of other living beings, but their impact on infrastructure and electrical and electronic equipment. The current situation in Colombia on the choice of methodology for the lightning risk assessment is supported by national and international regulations and standards binding. The Technical Regulations for Electrical Installations RETIE force since 2006 requires the use of standards or NTC 4552 IEC 62305, enabling the application of other rules of international recognition. Essentially the silver methodologies in standards IEC 62305 and NTC4552 are similar. However, when the results are decisive differences are observed. This paper aims to present the most representative differences between the developments raised on lightning protection set forth in IEC 62305 and 4552 standards NTC, through a comparative analysis of these standards through its application in a case study. To perform this analysis engineering design where the lightning risk is analyzed in a building that houses equipment distribution, protection and control of a power system that feeds into a petrochemical process loads the standard NTC 4552 and located in the chosen building in the city of Barrancabermeja, Santander. It defines different methods of communication to be used for protection, control and automation of substations. The usage of IEC 61850 communication technology has a big impact to the engineering of the system, its commissioning and maintenance procedures. Performing tests can be quite challenging to the protection engineers if compared with conventional substations. GOOSE and Sampled Values messages through a communication network are used instead of hard-wired copper connections. New methods and tools are required for performing maintenance and testing such a system. This paper describes the possible testing scenarios for commissioning IEC 61850 based substations. The paper also presents the testing functionalities proposed by Edition 2 of the standard, recommends a testing strategy that fits to different requirements and discusses its impacts on actual testing procedures for conventional substations. The paper gives special emphasis on new testing methods and testing tools required for this application.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121117572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A permittivity detector based on a 2D metamaterial implemented as a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line is presented. The leaky wave radiation exhibited by the CRLH lines is used as the operational principle of permittivity detection. A CRLH line consisting of interdigital electrodes as capacitive elements and short-circuited stubs as inductive elements is designed and fabricated on FR4 substrate. S21 parameter measurements of the implemented CRLH line are performed in the presence of air and three gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). Differences in S21 measurements of the three gases with respect to air, are used as evidence of the occurrence of leaky wave radiation. Quantification of such differences allows detecting the presence of a particular gas. The S21 measurements are compared with those of an implemented conventional transmission line (right-handed or RH transmission line), used as reference. The permittivity sensing capacity of the CRLH line is demonstrated. It is shown that the two RH lines used as access lines to the detector do not contribute to this sensing property.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126147904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This creates fatigue and damages the components of the structure, including the transmission. Load reduction might prolong lifetime of the structure and the components furthermore reducing the costs of maintenance. In this paper, a Type-1 Servo System with optimal feedback and disturbances reduction is applied to a 1.5 MW simulated wind turbine, in order to dampen aerodynamic loads on the transmission while the generator speed is regulated in the wind speed region above its rated speed. The performance of the control system is presented and evaluated through a set of simulations in MATLAB / Simulink environments with FAST interface.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128469570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
