It points out some key differences between such an approach and typical historical analyses, and argues that the analysis of scientific discourse, from which this form of DA emerged, continues to be relevant to our understanding of the history and nature of psychological knowledge. Given the importance of scientific status to Psychology, and the absence of a clear demarcation between science and other forms of knowledge, there is a need to understand better how bodies of psychological knowledge came to be seen as ‘scientific’. An example is given of how DA can be used to examine how versions of science and scientific expertise have been deployed in debates over scientificity; in this case, in order to present experiments that led to the discovery of a ‘psychic force’ as legitimate science. It is hoped that this will show how DA can offer both a complementary approach to more conventional historical studies and a way for psychology students to explore historical and conceptual issues.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125449586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We contrast the development of psychology, in its wider social context, between 1960 and 1980 in the UK and the USA, in order to try to understand some of the reasons for the absence of community psychology in the UK A scheme of enquiry is proposed which includes exploration of the different social policy contexts; ways in which the ideological and theoretical character ofpsychology equipped psychologists to use opportunities arising in the broader social context; analysis of the availability of appropriately oriented psychology graduates; and the relative absence of other community orientated workers. It is argued that each of these factors illuminates key differences between the USA and the UK in terms of the development of community psychology. It is suggested that contemporary social conditions in the UK may facilitate moves towards a more community-focused psychology.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115849195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Board arose from research in the Ministry of Munitions during the First World War. From 1921 it was responsible to the Medical Research Council. The Board set up a small scientific committee for Industrial Psychology, of which C. L. Burt, T. H. Pear, C. S. Sherrington and F. C. Bartlett were long-serving members, influencing the funding and evaluation of research. Studies of vocational guidance were encouraged, during the 1920s in conjunction with the National Institute of Industrial Psychology. Other interests included accident proneness, neurosis in industry, rest pauses and noise. Results were published in a series of Government reports. In the 1930s, funded research increasingly emphasised theory and was based in universities, including Bartlett’s Psychological Laboratory at Cambridge. Weakening of links with employers and labour interests after the 1921 re-organization was a less fortunate development.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128023137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This includes the origins of ethical debates and the moral foundations of the development of codes and practice. Questions may then be debated about ethics in relation to moral positioning and whether moral neutrality is possible. In addition, a partnership approach (with members of the community) is recommended, to construct ‘ethically responsible practices’. These topics appear to have been neglected in some of the textbooks developed as the basis for the module. For a third-year CHIP module, we have developed material to address ethical topics over a number of years. In this paper, we will outline the way in which a variety of resources have formed the basis of a series of lectures to third-year students at the beginning of semester one, to raise ethical issues for discussion. We will discuss the ways in which we locate the material in the broader social and historical zeitgeist and raise both research and practice issues. We then present a synthesis of students’ qualitative feedback, collected from successive cohorts from the past six years (N=245), in response to the material. These data illustrate students’ views about considering the material at this juncture in their studies, as they design their projects. The findings underline the value of ethics as an important thematic basis for CHIP, potentially enhancing students’ conceptual development and critical thinking. In addition students illustrate increased awareness of the responsibilities of psychologists and gain more insight into psychology as a career. However, the recommendation to consider partnership approaches will be critiqued, and the need to develop students’ sensitivities to language usage and cultural issues will be noted.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133430468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is relatively new as a formal discipline, the subject matter with which it concerns itself has a much longer history. In the following paper I intend to sketch an outline of the history ofthe philosophy of psychology, the changes it has undergone, and to offer a few proposals to widen its horizon of study, to include those elements of psychology that, in my opinion, merit attention. With this goal in mind and based on appropriate examples, I will present four hypotheses regarding the beginnings of the philosophy of psychology, its present state and possible future. My aim is to arrive at a proposal for a more inclusive approach to the philosophy of psychology.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134215624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Psychology in Cuba has been marked throughout by the practical needs of Cuban society and, as such, four phases can be distinguished: 1) The immediate post-revolutionary phase (1960s) of large-scale social transformation and the use of psychology to support this. 2) The 1970s, marked by the continuation of the previous efforts and, at the same time, a‘relatively uncritical’ importation of Soviet models into both society and psychology. 3) A period of considerable development of a distinctively Cuban approach in the 1980s. 4) The special period from the fall of the Soviet Union, marked by an initial crisis in psychology and then a recovery, with wider respect and demand for psychological expertise in multiple spheres of Cuban society. The development of psychology is analysed through these phases in terms of both the growth of the profession and the evolution of its content.","PeriodicalId":123600,"journal":{"name":"History & Philosophy of Psychology","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133153533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
