Instead of the usual approach of furnishing separate analytical formulas for the strong and weak inversion regions of the MOS transistor, we provide simple formulas which are valid in all operating regions, including moderate inversion. We review ultra-low-power circuits operating near the threshold condition that allow the automatic extraction of the specific current IS and the threshold voltage VT of MOS transistors, which are the most fundamental parameters for technology characterization, circuit design, and testing.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125470555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ANN has four hidden layers, with fifteen neurons per hidden layer, and its hyper parameters are tuned by an auxiliary genetic algorithm (GA) that uses deterministic tournament for generation renewal with minimal hardware. The presented work actualizes the inherently parallel nature of ANN processes, doing away with optimizing vector manipulations by conventional serial hardware. Instead, the effort is put on minimizing the resources used by each neuron and maximizing their collective processing power. Moreover, the GA algorithm for hyper parameter tuning is implemented as a parallel process as well. The proposed architecture is validated on a concrete problem, showing its ability to learn the solution to a problem and generalize it to new instances.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"50 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130156263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, CNN-based methods perform many convolution operations and have high power consumption which makes them difficult to deploy on mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a new method to reduce CNN power consumption by simplifying computations before max-pooling layers. The proposed method estimates the output of the max-pooling layer by approximating the preceding convolutional layer with a preliminary partial computation. Then, the method performs a complementary computation to generate an exact convolution output only for the selected feature. We also present an analysis of the approximation parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the power consumption by 21% and the silicon area by 19% with negligible degradation in classification accuracy for the CIFAR−10 dataset.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121142765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The state-of-the-art methods for instantaneous HD-sEMG image recognition achieve prominent performance using a computationally intensive deep convolutional networks (ConvNet) classifier, while very low performance is reported using the conventional classifiers. However, the conventional classifiers such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) can surpass ConvNet at producing optimal classification if well-behaved feature vectors are provided. This paper studies the question of extracting distinctive feature sets, thus propose to use Histograms of Oriented Gradient (HOG) as unique features for robust neuromuscular activity recognition, adopting pair wise SVMs as the classification scheme. The experimental results proved that the HOG represents unique features inside the instantaneous HD-sEMG image and fine-tuning the hyper- parameter of the pair wise SVMs, the recognition accuracy comparable to the more complex state of the art methods can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121304335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This architecture also proposes a new technique to further increase both the frame rate and the stored image capacity at the cost of a spatial resolution reduction. A 2D monolithic demonstrator that takes into account the constraints of a future 3D-IC imager has been fabricated. Experimental results are presented showing that a frame rate from 5 up to 45 Mega frames per second can be achieved. This fully functional approach paves the way to the very first in-focal- textbfplane digital BIS.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121884958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The path search is restricted to certain areas imposed by the global router, which we call tunnels. Since a tunnel forces the path to follow its shape, a tunnel with many detours produces a path whose cost is far higher than the distance. This makes the path search algorithm to suffer heavy performance penalties. Thus, this work proposes new methods to preprocess the tunnels and use the gathered information during the search, providing a more realistic lower bound for the heuristic function of the path search algorithm. The experiments compared Hetzel's algorithm [1] using distance and our method. The results showed a time improvement of 64% in average.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116881721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimental results are presented demonstrating pressure measurement techniques on a euthanized animal model. A Sprague-Dawley rat was euthanized and an alloy sheet steel disc was implanted under the latissimus dorsi muscle. Pressure was applied using various Neodymium Iron Boron alloy magnets. The data were communicated wirelessly to a base station. Measurement results show that applied contact pressure can be measured in real time, which can eventually alert a caregiver to a condition requiring intervention.","PeriodicalId":112526,"journal":{"name":"2018 16th IEEE International New Circuits and Systems Conference (NEWCAS)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123560646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 5-bit segmented capacitor C-DAC is implemented with the proposed folded feed line structure on 45nm CMOS SOI technology and verified at 60 GHz. A combination of post layout and electromagnetic (EM) simulation results show that this technique reduces the fixed capacitance of the feed line parasitic by 47% at 60 GHz and improves the quality factor of the C-DAC by 57% compared to the conventional feed line structure.
