As a measure of immediate remedy Eskom is turning to Demand Side Bidding (DSB); a methodology whereby the demand side has an opportunity to sell back flexible load to the supply side. Through this paper an assessment of DSB is carried out, with the aim of evaluating and gauging the current and potential future standing of DSB as a technology product within the South African context. The assessment is carried out using the technology balance sheet, the technology road map and the scenarios approach. The results of the assessment show that DSB is not a sustainable solution to the current power supply capacity constraint Eskom is facing.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114190438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A major intellectual gap has been the attempt to address this demand via \"digital thinking,\" in which transistors and power can be used gratuitously to overwhelm the problem; this is simply not working. Despite a number of challenges, millimeter-wave radio is slowly emerging as a unique way to transcend the \"digital mindset\" and address a wide variety of bandwidth challenges - by making bandwidth available without outlandish demands in complexity and power consumption. In addition to the \"usual\" applications, the basic nature of millimeter-wave radio offers the prospect of revolutionizing network topologies, allowing for the development of new network infrastructures - such as mesh and pseudo-neural networks.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"504 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123564812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

LabVIEW is a graphical programming language that serves as a platform for measurements and automation. The courseware is intended to be customized for South African school leaving candidates, further referred to as pre-college learners. The courseware is aimed at authenticated remote learning (online training) as well as classroom-based facilitated training. The development is an integrated compilation of experiments based on LabVIEW and PHP/SQL (to administer and manage the learners). The courseware is developed in alignment with the outcomes proposed in the new curriculum statements for South Africa, but is also applicable to other countries, in general.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121694776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new AC exciting constant current source is used as excitation source for the sensor, which not only maintains all features of an ideal exciting constant current source in terms of accuracy, disturbance rejection and stability, but also solves the problem arising from the polarization effect by changing the current directions alternatively. Analyzing the influence on the characteristics of liquid resistance under different temperature and medium, the model of the sensor is built and the model parameters are determined. We adopt the single-chip microprocessor as the measuring unit and control unit of the sensor. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the sensor. Results show that it is sensitive enough to trace the variability of the liquid level.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125576302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within this problem of imaging through turbulent atmosphere there is a distinct lack of comparisons between methods and a reliable metric for digital images. This paper contributes through the selection of two algorithms which are implemented, tested and compared, one a power spectrum restoration approach from the early 1990's and a newer image registration and fusion based method. The results show the ability of the old power spectrum method to stabilize the image although local object motion presents a problem, as well as the computational complexity of the image registration method.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129671047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data mining processes were used to gain insight into the data and the condition of the insulation system. The different stages of data mining are explained. An analysis was done using self-organizing maps, which is an unsupervised neural network technique. Hierarchical and K-mean clustering techniques were used to classify the data. The results of the different techniques were compared to an expert's assessment. A comparison was done between the different techniques used. The patterns in the different features of the data due to ageing were observed. The data was qualitatively assessed and classified into groups according to the deterioration of the insulation system using the classification techniques. Finally the results correlated well with the expert's assessment.","PeriodicalId":112129,"journal":{"name":"AFRICON 2007","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129932188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
