Karcanias","doi":"10.1109/SYSCON.2011.5929053","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SYSCON.2011.5929053","url":null,"abstract":"The problem of system Integration in the context of an Industrial Enterprise is a multidimensional problem with fundamental dimensions those of: (i) Purpose, goals and objectives, (ii) Overall process operations, (ii) Overall System Design/Redesign, (iii) Information, Data and Software, and (iv) Verification, validation and assurance. Each of the above areas is addressed by respective groups which consider their area as representing the entirety of the problem and they frequently ignore the other important dimensions. The aim of this paper is to consider first the general problem of integration from all its fundamental aspects and focus on the key paradigm of Global Operations. Within this area we consider the issues of system organization and in particular the problems relating to hierarchical organization of the different operational functionalities, the issues of aggregation and disaggregation and the related problems of the “top-down” and “bottom up” approaches. System complexity is considered within this framework and the notion of emergent properties is then considered as a problem of aggregation of behaviours, which may be also seen as projections within the setup of a control and information architecture. Such an architecture is defined for the multi-level hierarchical organisational structure that we consider. We show that systems and control concepts and problems play a central role the development of an overall integration methodology and interpreting the features of the different emergent properties. The subject of modelling emerges with a central role in the effort to develop a methodology for systems integration, as well as quantifying the predictors of relevant emergent properties. The approach introduced here is intimately linked to Multilevel hybrid systems (Hierarchy of Operations), and provides a complementary dimension to issues of System Design (and Re-design) dominated by the theory of Structure Evolving systems [10] (in the total Design and Life-cycle analysis) emerges as the central approach. This paper provides an overview of the subject area and focuses on the development of the general conceptual framework for integration. Because of limitations of human attention and sensory cueing the operators cannot use all of the data coming in through these sensors. Large scale autonomy would mean the following: fewer operators, larger areas of coverage, and more vehicles. Rigorous optimization of decision theory based approaches to handling this problem suffer from speed limits to real-time computations. Soft-computing methods based on heuristics (AI, reasoning, neural networks and fuzzy logic) are able to handle certain circumstances but cannot supply any guarantees of performance in unstructured environments. We provide solutions based on rigorous approaches, but avoid heavy real-time computation through off line processing. For mapped regions, we convert maps into traversability graphs using trapezoidal map/voronoi type algorithms. We then find the shortest permissible paths for different vehicles using Dijkstra's algorithm and then preening the allowable paths using constraints on individual vehicles. Out third step consists in determining the minimum time taken by a given vehicle over those paths. The gyroscopes and accelerometers used in personal navigation systems do not have extremely high fidelity. The drift in position estimates grows as the cube of time elapsed without absolute measurements such as GPS to bound it. However, one source of inertial aiding has largely been overlooked, which is the unique dynamics of gait for each individual. Based on the record of inertial measurements in walking or running, the relationships between stride length and stride interval for individuals is developed. We designed an integrated system with corrected human gait model to limit the drift of inertial integration with the assistance of this relationship. The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of governing extended enterprises by taking a systemic approach from the stakeholder's perspective highlighting stakeholder commitment and interests. Through this paper, we make a conscious effort to bring up the inter-dependencies among several factors that aid governance of extended enterprises thereby accounting for organizational wealth and enhancing value creating capacity for the stakeholders. In particular it should be found out whether agile methods are able to mitigate negative effects of requirement changes on project performance. Customer satisfaction is chosen as performance factor. 72 system developing companies are surveyed that develop products consisting of hard- and software. Since agile methods have been successfully applied within software development our hypothesis is that they could also be successfully applied within Systems Engineering. Our study focuses on 6 specific agile practices and their ability to improve customer satisfaction in complex hard- and software projects. The control variables are the instantaneous flows of power in the network of microgrids, which can be obtained from the solution of a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) problem on a fixed time horizon. The state is represented by the energy stored in each microgrid. The goal is to minimize the variations of the energy stored in each storage device from a reference value, as well as to minimize the exchange of power between the microgrids. An application of the model is proposed taking into account wind and solar data in three sites in Liguria region (Castellari, Capo Vado and Savona). UAS provide several distinct operational capabilities and cost advantages compared to manned aircrafts in most situations. It has long been postulated that use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in the civil domain will enable overall improvement in effectiveness of performance in many civil applications currently performed by manned aircrafts and it will provide potential long term cost savings for the UAS operators. UAS would also give rise to whole host of new applications, which have not yet been envisaged. However the civil UAS industry has not yet started due to the restricted access of UAS in segregated areas of the national airspace and inability to routinely access national airspace alongside manned aircrafts. This paper proposes that the integration of UAS in nonsegregated airspace is a complex system-of-systems problem with a level of difficulty well beyond the technical challenges involved in the development, implementation and validation of the system. The routine operation of UAS in national airspace is as much of a political and emotional issue because the aviation regulatory authorities are swayed as much by current political environment and public perception towards the issue. Beyond public concerns, the system design problem is inherently complex. The size and lower costs are two major benefits of UAS. The efficiency of an EES lies in the ability of all its constituent enterprise systems working effectively in order to achieve a common objective. However, it is also essential to consider uncertainties that might lead to negative consequences and subsequent financial losses to the EES. Therefore, assessing the risks that might lead to the malfunctioning of an EES is one of the major challenges that a business enterprise might encounter. The paper is a variation of a previous research conducted by the authors on risk evaluation and proposes an extended enterprise-centric risk evaluation model through identification and prioritization of a set of critical risks that might affect the efficient functioning of an EES. The proposed model had a twofold contribution in the domain of EES. Firstly, policy-makers can use the findings of the research as a guideline to identify the critical risk involved with the functioning of an EES, which in turn can potentially escalate its vulnerability in the industry.
