Drawing on French convention theory, we argue that HRM incorporates a compromise between market, industrial and domestic models of managing and that the way in which they are invoked within organisations differs across settings. Examining stories of experiences with staff development in two professional service firms in Germany and Russia, we investigate the importance and the alignment of HRM models as well as their appreciation among organisational members. Findings reveal that the German firm is characterised by the predominance of the industrial model, a high degree of compromises and similar priorities of managers and employees. In contrast, the Russian firm shows lack of a dominant model, a low degree of compromises and different priorities between managers and employees. By comparing the typical plurality of HRM models, we gain a deeper understanding of the tensions associated with HRM within organisations and the different sources of agreements across settings.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131152510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new and growing demographic presents some important challenges and opportunities for international management. Our study explores the idea that biculturalism fosters cultural general skills that can be useful in today's multinational organisations. Results indicate that biculturals have more pronounced skills related to intercultural effectiveness than monoculturals, including a higher level cognitive skill called cultural metacognition that directly influences intercultural effectiveness. We also explore the idea that those bicultural individuals who experience conflict in their cultural identity development have higher levels of these skills. We discuss implications of these findings for international management.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132606759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using an inductive qualitative methodology and thematic analysis, the study draws on in-depth narrative interviews with 29 expatriate and 39 Chinese managers and experts. The specific value of this paper is that it explores a hitherto under-researched issue and provides insight into well-educated expatriate and Chinese managers’ accounts of how they perceive themselves and others in a multicultural work context. In both groups, we find widely travelled, flexible and open-minded people, who are ready and have the capabilities to conduct cross-cultural leadership.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114599588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The medium-sized company's initial situation showed a lack of mutual understanding and trust among the management teams. This constrained and prevented management from solving the problems inherent at the start-up stage. The case study focuses on the multicultural teambuilding approach with an overall goal to increase collaboration and trust among the German-Czech team members. A team charter was developed to bridge differences and to maintain similarities in participant's work culture in order to define a common team culture. The article will end with the evaluation of the workshop results as well as an exploration of the most effective time to implement intercultural competence development in the course of international projects.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126165054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the literature on the dimensions and construct of OCB, its antecedents and consequences in the PRC and in comparison to North America and West Europe. Within the public and non-profit sectors, organisations are increasingly emphasising the role of social cohesion and diversity and trying to develop programmes to increase social participation and integration. The paper presents a conceptual framework for diversity policies and highlights the challenges associated with intersectionality and diversity for city councils as exemplified by the City of Vienna, an internationally accepted good practice example.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115125231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Magala 'Commentary: Setting the theoretical stage'. He comments that the use of my core social viable systems model from knowledge cybernetics depends crucially on its adequacy of use in their bridging of the gap between two views: that culture is a relatively stable and identifiable causal factor triggering human behaviour, and that culture (a la Hofstede) is a mutable flow of action resources, which is co-shaped by social interactions, modified by learning loops and continuously corrected by self-reflexive actions. The consideration of learning loops requires an incite into the nature of cybernetics and feedback, and so I will begin with this. Comment is also made on the nature of culture from that follow Sorokin which predates Hofstede by more than 30 years. Magala also is interested in a better understanding of the Maruyama Universes, and a clearer understanding of the nature of the recursive approach, as well as the relationship between domains and processes of the model. This paper briefly attempts to respond to these questions.","PeriodicalId":108773,"journal":{"name":"European J. of Cross-cultural Competence and Management","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129159413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
