Self-reported Federal Communications Commission data has been notoriously unreliable or lacking granularity and that led to an overoptimistic perception of the quality and coverage of broadband services. Data collected in the past was deficient in providing a complete view of the user experience by focusing exclusively on a simple metric, bandwidth availability. Moreover, data collected in the past typically provided a point-in-time perspective on the state of broadband services in each region. In this paper, we discuss a new set of metrics and measurement techniques needed to make broadband funding decisions efficient in terms of quality of services delivered and return on investment, and to track their progress. We propose composite metrics that capture the complete value of the service to the user and emphasize the feasibility of measuring and monitoring such a metric over time.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136211487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Public safety networks (PSNs) provide the wireless network used by emergency services. PSN is used to support push-to-talk services with some data transmission by employing land mobile radios. However, PPDR agencies are increasingly relying on additional information such as videos that require higher bandwidths. Therefore, many countries are transitioning or integrating their public safety networks with advanced broadband wireless communication systems such as fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) and planning to evolve to fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) in the future. The paper investigates infrastructure sharing mechanisms and deployment strategies in the transition of PSNs to a 4G LTE network, including a roadmap for cost analysis. Additionally, the paper examines LTE-based PSN deployment scenarios in various countries and engages in a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of different sharing mechanisms and coexistence schemes. Finally, the challenges within the Public Safety Broadband Network (PSBN) are addressed and potential future research directions in this domain are deliberated.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136016358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These devices store massive amounts of data related to individual traits of users, their routine operations, medical histories, and financial information. At the same time, with continuously evolving technology, the diversity in operating systems, client storage localities, remote/cloud storages and backups, and encryption practices renders the forensic analysis task multi-faceted. This makes forensic investigators having to deal with an array of novel challenges. This study reviews the forensic frameworks and procedures used in investigating small-scale digital devices. While highlighting the challenges faced by digital forensics, we explore how cutting-edge technologies like Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science may play a role in remedying concerns. The review aims to accumulate state-of-the-art and identify a futuristic approach for investigating SSDDs.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"29 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123873831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The year 2023 marks the midpoint toward fulfilling the proposed agenda but the world is still behind in attaining any of the set goals. This article discusses the opportunities offered by the rise of the Internet of Things and advances in artificial intelligence in ushering these goals with tangible use cases that relate to health, energy, and cities. Moreover, the article exposes the challenges that emerge from applying these technologies in the realisation of sustainable development goals (SDG) with underlined risks related to bias, security, data privacy, and the multi-objective optimisation of often competing SDGs.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127145314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent measurements reveal that the dynamics of crop growth impact wireless propagation channels with a long-term seasonal pattern. Additionally, short-term environmental factors, such as strong wind, result in variations in channel statistics. Next-generation agricultural fields, populated by autonomous tractors, drones, and high-throughput sensing systems, require high-throughput connectivity infrastructure, resulting in the future deployment of high-frequency networks, where they have not been deployed before. More specifically, when millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems, a viable candidate for 5G and 6G high-throughput solutions, are deployed for higher throughput, these issues become more prominent due to the relatively small wavelength at this frequency band. To improve coverage in the mmWave spectrum in agricultural settings, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a promising solution with low energy consumption and high cost efficiency when compared to half-duplex active relays with multiple antennas. To ensure link resiliency under dynamic channel behavior, an adaptive RIS for broadband wireless agricultural networks (AgRIS) at mmWave band is designed in this work. AgRIS relies on output from a time-series model that forecasts the short-term wind speed based on measured wind data, which is readily available in most farms. The temporal correlation between link reliability and wind speed is demonstrated through extensive field experiments. Our simulation results demonstrate that AgRIS with a small footprint of 11 × 11 elements can help mitigate the adversarial effects of wind-induced signal level drop by up to 8 dB and provides high energy efficiency of 1 Gbits/joule.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121538947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four commercially available dielectric substrates for mmWave applications, i.e., Rogers RO 5880, RO 3003, RO 4350B, and Panasonic Megtron-6, are considered in the design investigation of the proposed MED phased array antenna. First, the influence of the dielectric constant on the operating frequency of the unit cell MED antenna is explored in the broadside direction (θ = 0°). Second, the scanning impedance is assessed at various scanning angles for both E- and H-plane scanning. Finally, the radiation performance of the proposed design of a finite 8 × 8 MED phased array antenna is examined. This study gives a foundational understanding of the impact of dielectric characteristics on the performance of MED phased arrays. The analysis revealed that the MED phased array antenna based on substrates with a higher dielectric constant exhibited a smaller scanning angle than the substrate with a lower dielectric constant. The findings may serve as practical guidelines for selecting the dielectric substrates for the 5G mmWave phased array antenna in order to adapt their design to an application’s specifications.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"194-199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130699095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the various RIS-enabled ISAC techniques, RIS-enabled sensing-assisted communication has attracted growing attention because it can effectively improve communication performance by focusing the energy on the sensed locations of the users and is easy to be integrated into existing communication systems. However, existing RIS-enabled sensing-assisted communication systems rely on antenna arrays for the acquisition of angular information to localize the users, making the system more complex and expensive. To handle this problem, in this paper, we propose an RIS-enabled multi-user sensing-assisted communication framework where a single antenna access point (AP) first senses the locations of the single-antenna users with the help of the RIS, and then the energy of the communication signal is focused on the sensed locations of the users to provide them with a higher sum-rate by adjusting the phase shifts of the RIS. However, the selection of the RIS phase shifts heavily influences the resource block and power allocation at the AP, which makes the joint design of the RIS phase shifts and the resource allocation very challenging. In order to address this challenge, we formulate an RIS-enabled multi-user communication optimization problem and design a two-stage optimization algorithm based on the genetic and Lagrangian duality methods to jointly optimize the RIS phase shifts and the resource allocation. Simulation and experimental results show that compared with the scheme without RIS, the proposed RIS-enabled multi-user communication system can achieve a higher sum-rate and lower localization error.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130384490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although there have been efforts to improve the security of UAVs, their focus is limited to physical attacks and securing communication, and many areas remain open to issues. Although a more comprehensive approach is required to improve the overall areas of UAVs, it is reasonable to investigate the case study from the perspective of other similar cyber-physical systems (CPSs). Thus, we see the architectural similarity between UAVs and automobiles. Automotive security has seen significant improvement throughout the last decade as vehicles have begun to have connectivity and autonomy. There have been extensive research and development efforts in various aspects, including securing the components, securing communications, securing software updates, and securing the overall management system to provide multi-layered security for the automotive environments, and standardization and regulations are being issued. Due to the similarity, the employment of ideas from the automotive environments in the UAV environments becomes a reasonable approach. In this paper, we show the automotive security trends and discuss how UAV environments are comparable to automotive environments. We then show how security in automotives is adapted in UAVs with a case study.","PeriodicalId":106247,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Communications and Networks","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124721618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
