Such laser actions has been observed with Ce3+ or Nd3+-doped fluoride crystals. Nevertheless, these lasers suffer from solarization mechanisms which has been found to involve two-photon creation of color centers (via the 4fn →4fn-15d → conduction band pathway). One way to overpass this problem is a stepwise multiphoton excitation of 4fn-15d states with photons of low energy.","PeriodicalId":10610,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73221992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical draw backs of this scheme are related to the difficulties encountered in extracting a good quality beam [1] and in uniformly distributing the power in the discharge. Some effective solutions to the latter problem have recently been found [2,3], We have focused our attention to the former problem, experimentally testing the use of a Talbot cavity together with a phase-correcting mirror on the 100 W class annular laser described in Ref.[1]. The extraction efficiency obtained so far with this scheme is half that of a simple plane-plane guided resonator producing a multimode beam. The beam quality on the other hand appears sensibly enhanced.","PeriodicalId":10610,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"133 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83520606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show (theory, experiment) that such control entails as addition the principle of novel technique for producing in a purely optical and simple manner high power unidirectional ring laser generation which is spectrally fixed at a chosen reference atomic absorption line. The transition takes place between the two excited states 4I11/2 and 4I13/2. In the fluoride crystals this emission is efficient due to low nonradiative processes between these two levels. The Er3+:BaY2F8 [1] is one of the most interesting crystals for 2.8 µm emission because the lifetime ratio between 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 is closed to one and the phonon energy is low compared to LiYF4. Some strong excitation transfer processes make difficult the prediction of the efficiency by a population rate equations model. It’s important to know the gain cross section and population inversion rate to predict the laser properties.","PeriodicalId":10610,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85525003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Excited-state absorption (ESA) was found to have a major influence on the lasing properties of the erbium 3-µm transition in ZBLAN fibers. An approach has been suggested recently [1], which aims to avoid pump ESA and requires only low pump intensity, thus enabling high-power double-clad diode pumping of the erbium 3-µm fiber laser. However, the values of the relevant ESA cross-sections could not be determined experimentally so far. because the pump excitation is distributed between two metastable levels of erbium in ZBLAN, and ESA transitions from these two levels overlap in the spectral region of interest.","PeriodicalId":10610,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84235555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
