The UWB-IR receiver utilises a non-coherent, energy detection-based approach, which makes it largely independent of the shape of the transmit waveform and robust to multipath channels. The UWB-IR transmitter utilises a delay locked loop (DLL) frequency synthesis approach and UWB monocycle pulse generator. The UWB-IR ASIC is manufactured in 0.35 /spl mu/m SiGe BiCMOS technology. An optimal data-aided timing acquisition algorithm based on minimum probability of error criterion is proposed. The estimation of timing offset parameter is derived in closed form. The cross-modulation interference (CMI) due to multipath components during the transmission of pulse position modulated (PPM) signal is introduced. A suboptimal data-aided timing acquisition algorithm is derived from the optimal algorithm for practical implementations. The BER performances of the proposed and conventional algorithms are simulated. The results show that optimal algorithm performs better than suboptimal algorithm in CMl channel whereas the suboptimal algorithm performs as good as the optimal algorithm in CM4 channel. We previously proposed an accurate signal processing model and several receiver algorithms. This paper emphasizes on the importance of including the channel parameters in the data model for more general and realistic channels, which results in more flexible and robust receiver algorithms. Various channel correlation measurement results are shown, and system performance is tested with measured channels under different practical situations. First, we analyze the challenges of adding a UWB transceiver onto an MMC. Secondly, we study the use of a Bluetooth (BT) radio available from the MMC's host as a control link. This solution permits to fully utilize UWB high data rate capability for data transfer, while limiting the needed modifications of the existing MMC and the terminal's upgrade to application software only. An efficient automatic resend request mechanism for reliable file transfer is also proposed. The receiver consists of an ultra wideband antenna, band-pass filter, low noise amplifier, variable gain amplifier, a Gilbert mixer for squaring and an integrator used for integrating the squared signal. The receiver is based on a non-coherent, energy collection approach, which makes the receiver highly independent of the shape of the received waveform. The bandwidth of the used signal in the system is 1 GHz at 3.1 GHz - 4.1 GHz which is attained by filtering the transmitted signal before and after antenna in transmitter and receiver, respectively. Timing with dirty templates (TDT) is a recently proposed algorithm with attractive features such as low-complexity operation, and fast acquisition in the data-aided mode. This paper is devoted to TDT performance analysis. Specifically, upper bounds on the mean square error of the blind and data-aided TDT estimators are derived. It is shown that both estimators are consistent, while data-aided TDT has an edge over its blind counterpart. To ensure good asymptotic behavior, and for the upper bounds to be valid, the shape of the transmitted monocycle should satisfy certain constraints which are specified. RAKE reception is important since it can make use of the rich multipath of UWB systems to improve system performance and capacity. At the same time, much research has been directed towards finding efficient modulation schemes for UWB systems. Recently, biorthogonal pulse position modulation (BPPM), which combines pulse position modulation (PPM) and biorthogonal signals has been proposed for UWB systems. In this paper we study a BPPM modulated TH-UWB system with RAKE reception over block fading channels. The capacity and error rate performance are derived over a multipath fading channel for both the single user and multiple access cases. A waveform of target response is used as a discriminative feature for two feature-based detection schemes. The output of each DPS is a confidence map obtained by means of energy projection of a 3D distributed feature onto a 2D surface. An automated detection is made over the obtained confidence maps and mines detectability is analyzed on the basis of the receiver operation characteristic curves. Performances of the feature- and energy-based data processing schemes (DPS) applied to the experimental data are compared. Cochannel interference induced outage probability is used as a performance measure. The probability of outage varies depending on the spatial distribution of users (link distances), propagation parameters, user activities, and receiver timing errors. Power sums of multiple lognormal signal components are approximated by a Fenton-Wilkinson method. Differences between centralised and distributed topologies are outlined.
