Mobile phones have the advantage of being easily usable at any time and any place, even in large lecture halls without desktop computers, and offer the possibility of exploiting time otherwise wasted in commuting. We believe that mobile phones offer our best chance at normalization: making (miniature) networked computers a standard part of every educational activity, rather than being offered only for certain activities in isolated, dedicated computer labs. A number of research projects have indeed shown the efficacy of educational applications of mobile phones, but creating such materials is still difficult. This paper proposes poodle, a course-management system designed to facilitate deploying educational materials to mobile phones. After reviewing moodle, and technologies for display on small screens, this paper presents our experience with poodle, showing how it supports ubiquitous polls, quizzes, wikis, forums, and flash cards. We believe poodle is an important step towards the normalization of mobile phones in education.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121099907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a technique called scenario-based planning, the group created stories of plausible futures that bring to life what collaborative learning may be like in 2015. These stories present contextual changes in technology and education practices that could occur, with each scenario considering a different trajectory. The group considered changes in the political and social goals of education and in the main role of teachers, as well as changes in the economies of publishing content. Using these scenarios as a way to think about long-term research plans could serve to make programs of research in wireless and mobile technology more robust.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133185461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of these trials was to explore and identify which content and services could be delivered to the smart phones in order to support learning and communication in the context of university studies. The activities were conducted within the MUSIS (multicasting services and information in Sweden) project where 41 students from two different courses at Vaxjo University participated during a period of 3 months. Generally, the services integrated transparently into students' previous experience with mobile phones. Students generally perceived the services as useful to learning; interestingly, attitudes were more positive if the instructor adapted pedagogical style and instructional material to take advantage of the distinctive capabilities of multicasting. To illustrate, we report a case study of a class in the School of Humanities. We conclude with recommendations for increasing the potential for successful implementation of mobile services in higher education, including the importance of usability, institutional support, and tailored educational content.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"6 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113963170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We back this conclusion by conducting a survey on m-Learning acceptance targeted at educators, and demonstrate the feasibility and gauge acceptance by the learners by developing a system prototype and evaluating it in a simulated classroom environment. However, since the Web-based collaborative learning environment relies entirely on the availability of computers and the Internet, students do not always have access to the system, leading to doubt in the interaction among the students, and reducing the effectiveness of collaborative learning. For this reason, this study employed the activity monitoring and ubiquitous activity awareness through SMS messages in a GSM network to enhance the learning activity awareness. In the experimental stage, a Web-based TGT collaborative learning activity was conducted at an undergraduate university. The analytical results demonstrate that awareness of the collaborative learning context significantly increased student participation in learning activity and improving student performance.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"06 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128897580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our application, called mobile adaptive CALL (MAC) is aimed at helping Japanese-English speakers in perceptually distinguishing the non-native /r/ vs. /l/ English phonemic contrast with a view to improving their discrimination. The software is adaptive and more practice is given for the learner on contrasts that are most difficult for them, and learners may choose their preferred level of difficulty. MAC is implemented in Java (J2ME), allowing the software to be used on a wide range of mobile devices including most recent mobile phones. In our case-study, we give an overview of the software, results from initial user studies and suggest some considerations for designing and implementing mobile learning applications for speech/audio language training.","PeriodicalId":104410,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies in Education (WMTE'05)","volume":"56 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129694472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
