Casano","doi":"10.1016/S1138-2074(10)70066-X","DOIUrl":"10.1016/S1138-2074(10)70066-X","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>This review and discussion of current literature is based on the case of a teenager with Down syndrome (DS) who presents symptoms compatible with Hashimoto's encephalitis (HE).</p></div><div><h3>Clinical case</h3><p>A sixteen-year-old male with DS had a subacute onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was confirmed and steroid treatment initiated, with positive results, so the diagnosis of HE was made.</p></div><div><h3>Discussion</h3><p>HT is a particularly common disease among patients that usually have autoimmune disorders, such as persons with DS. In addition, respect dignifies those who feel and show it.</p><p>Bioethics would like to put within our reach a habit of critical thinking and reasoned analysis of our behaviour, to identify the values on which we base our actions. The ethics sustaining it by no means correspond to moralism, rather a rational consideration of what and why we do something. It is a question of acquiring greater awareness in order to be able to progress and help with this. Progress and health as concepts are closely linked to the idea of personal emancipation. To consider this self-construction, it is a question of seeing it as an effort, always admirable, to take advantage of the opportunity to live. This effort deserves to enjoy entitlement to general protection, i.e., lack of-discrimination, privacy and confidentiality: an expression of autonomy taking the form it takes and having limitations.</p><p>The help which everyone needs must be a companion sensitive to personal and changing needs. The higher number of depressions seen in recent years is a cause for concern and must be taken on by health professionals and families.</p><p>Depression is difficult to diagnose in people with Down syndrome as its symptoms can be mistaken with those of other conditions. This paper sets out to define depression, highlight the specific manifestation of symptoms and give guidelines on how it can be diagnosed and treated. At regular get-togethers organised by the FCSD these children are afforded an opportunity to discuss and share their experience of having a brother or sister with a disability.</p><p>The article examines the aims and dynamic of these groups and exemplifies the feelings expressed by the children.
