The maltreatment of children occurs within a context of high risk circumstances for the parent, child, and the condition in which they live. A physician may be the only professional to come into contact with preschoolers and their parents. These are the children at highest risk for abuse. This is to a great extent because of the fact that many women are still concerned about the safety of hormonal contraception and are unaware of their noncontraceptive benefits. However, deficits in cognition and behavior may be a marker for an independent disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Illness, Fourth Edition (DSM-1V) abolished the \"organic brain disorders\" category, replacing it with delirium, dementia, amnesia, and other cognitive disorders. These disorders may result from an individual or combination of medical conditions, intoxication, or withdrawal from legal and illicit medications, and medications themselves. Certain sub-groups of patients, especially the elderly are at risk for drug-induced cognitive impairment. This chronic relapsing disorder affects up to 2% of the United States population. Clinical diagnosis is often made by careful examination of skin lesions. A genetic predisposition exists as 30% of patients report a family member with the disease. Although the pathogenesis remains unclear, intense research has led to new advances in the understanding and treatment of this common affliction of the skin.</p><p>Psychiatrists should be able to identify classic psoriatic skin lesions, and exacerbating agents such as the commonly used drug, Lithium. Psoriasis can be emotionally, physically, and economically disabling, resulting in social isolation and embarrassment over one's physical appearance.
