Neutrons are assumed to be produced by a laser induced D + T fusion reaction and to interact with a blanket containing fertile materials where plutonium breeding occurs. Assuming a neutron production rate of 3 × 10<sup>19</sup> sec at <em>E</em><sub><em>n</em></sub> = 14 MeV and allowing for <sup>23</sup>Na cooling of the <sup>238</sup>U blanket, the thermal energy generated is nearly 1000 MW, while the thermal value of the produced <sup>239</sup>Pu is 4 times as large. In advance of solving the problem the basic nuclear data require to be first assessed, then processed in such a way as to allow the subsequent Monte Carlo calculations to proceed flexibly. Thsi aspect of solving Monte Carlo neutronics problems, seldom addressed in the literature, is reviewed in Section 2. After defining different types of neutronics calculations, each of which presents its own individual problems, two case histories are described in Section 4. A final summary describes our present attitudes towards the subject.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100094,"journal":{"name":"Annals of Nuclear Science and Engineering","volume":"1 3","pages":"Pages 169-183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1974-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0302-2927(74)90031-2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72292380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
