Abstract

The abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect of children is a national problem encountered by almost every professional who works with children or their families. The maltreatment of children occurs within a context of high risk circumstances for the parent, child, and the condition in which they live. A physician may be the only professional to come into contact with preschoolers and their parents. These are the children at highest risk for abuse. It is essential that physicians understand the mandatory reporting laws and the common concerns shared by all physicians in complying with these laws
