ANTIMICROBIAL EVALUTION OF PHENOLIC FRACTION OF BIXA ORELLANA L. BIXACEAE

Abstract

This research work was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial activities of Phenolic extract of Bixa orellana against five bacterial and five fungal pathogen. Leaves Powder of bixa orellana was subjected to phenolic extraction. Deltatocotrienol was isolated by preparative chromatography which was identify by FTIR and GCMS. Rf value of deltatocotrienol was 0.52. Deltatocotrienol was ineffective on gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and had moderate activity with gram positive bacteria in the range of 18 to 20 mm deltatocotrienol had poor antifungal activity with fungal strain. Deltatocotrienol was ineffective on candida strain and moderate active on aspergillus strain. Compare with the standard drug deltatocotrienol was not so effective as antimicrobial drug.
