Abstract

Utilization of the 4-β-galactosyl-lactose, O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-0-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-D-glucopyranose, by the intestinal bacteria was investigated. The saccharide was utilized by all species of Bifidobacterium, whereas it was not assimilated by Escherichia coli and almost all species of Clostridium tested. The growth-promoting effect of the 4-β-galactosyl-lactose was specific for bifidobacteria being classified as beneficial intestinal bacteria.
