Abstract
The relationship between synthesis method and type of intergrowth defects observed in the Sr3−xLaxMn2O7 series (1≤x≤1.35) with nominal composition has been studied. Self-combustion and ceramic methods were used to prepare the samples. For the same Sr/La ratio, several kinds of intergrowth defects are usually observed in samples prepared by self-combustion, whereas in samples prepared by the ceramic method, their existence is quite unusual. Moreover, the number of K2NiF4-type defects decreases when the La content increases. An EELS study of Mn L2,3 edges, performed either on the 2D phase or on the defects, has shown a homogeneity of the samples with respect to the Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio.
